butterworth-005Local artist Richard Butterworth absolutely loves living in Bridport and wished to make his contribution to the community. So he decided to create a poster of  Bridport & West Bay, and another about the Jurassic Coast.

They make wonderful, stylish, eye-catching, informative souvenirs for the tourists, who we hope will be visiting the Bridport Festival and the Olympic Games next year, to take home!

About the Artist

'Richard was born in 1932 in Dublin and spent his formative years in Dunmore East, Waterford.

He studied Graphic Art at Winchester School of Art, and from 1950 to 1960 worked as Art Director for Rediffusion, Southern Television in England and Telefis Eireann in Dublin.

He exhibited in various galleries in London and Dublin, e.g. Marjorie Parr, Ewan Phillips, the John Whitley Gallery in Cork Street, London and the Molesworth Gallery in Dublin. His works were included in collections in the United States, Holland and Spain.

In 1978 Richard was commissioned to design 30 illustrations for “Grones Dictionary of Music” which is still in print..

After some years teaching at Duncombe Park, Helmsley, Yorkshire, Richard moved to the south coast of Spain where he lived for 30 years.

butterworth-JurassicIn 1987, he was commissioned by the Junta of Andalucia’s Council of Tourism to paint 14 posters of the major Andalucian cities, such as Seville, Granada, Cadiz and Almeria. These were exported to all the spanish-speaking countries as an aid to tourism and education. Please see Richard’s website www.mrbeesart.co.uk for examples of this work.

He returned to England in 1996 and subsequently moved to Scotland where he lived for 4 years in Lamash on the Isle of Arran.

In 2006 he returned to Bridport, which he thoroughly enjoys, having lived in Netherbury some years previously when he was refurbishing antiques for sale in Portobello Market, London.

He continues to paint daily in many mediums such as gouache, oil, watercolour and metals, and is truly innovative!'
