axe throwerAs a sideline to Guy Mallinsons green woodwork courses you can also have a go at axe throwing using Swedish double-bitted two-handed overhead axe, the target is a huge softwood round hoisted in position with an official competition spec 'regulation' target painted on to it. From exactly 20ft (and all going well) the axe lands cleanly into the target with a very enjoyable thud. There are a simple set of rules - absolutely no axe catching or live target practice is permitted!

Visitors to The Book Shop or West Street Post Office may well have seen for sale the new hardback Palmers – The Story of a Dorset Brewer.  More than just a family history or the chronicles of a regional company, it is very much a tribute to brewing in Bridport and the two hundred year old relationship between a very British industry and its local community.

Recently Lord Skilling and my good self (Ed) were invited to take part in a green woodworking course run by Guy Mallinson and taught by Karen Hansen out in the wilds of Mangerton. Green woodworking means both green as in 'unseasoned wood' and green as in environmentally preferable to the alternatives.

We arrived bright and early and walked down the field to a picturesque lake and over a bridge onto a small island to find our host had lit the fire and got the coffee on.

The Tooled Cow - South West Dorset Leather and Crafts

Is a website show casing the leather work of A. M. Peters (or just Tony). It's also a place where other locally made art or crafts can be advertised.

The leather is mainly sourced from the oldest tannery in the world, which is in Collinton, Devon.  Tony uses brass fittings wherever possible.  All stitching is done by hand, even the thread is twisted by hand.

Bridport writer Dave Mort author of the classic slice of provincial mayhem MONEY FOR OLD ROPE has written a new book 'Play it Again Uncle Sam' The story is woven around political events in America from the Korean War and the witch-hunts of the early fifties to the Watergate scandal of the seventies, and therefore charts the rise of the civil rights and anti-war movements in America.
