Local Visitors Welcome!

Well-known to some, but a well-kept secret to others, Monkton Wyld Court is a long-standing but ever-changing resource to the local community as well as to those from further afield. As well as providing affordable accommodation, we also offer venue hire for weddings, parties and conferences, and a range of interesting courses on everything from beekeeping to yoga! You can also drop in for a delicious lunch and tour of the house and grounds on one of our Local Lunch days.

The Grade II listed Neo-Gothic country house was built in 1848 as a Rectory. In 1940, pioneering educators Carl and Eleanor Urban established a co-educational boarding school here to promote cooperative living and learning. Since the closure of the school in 1982, the resident community have continued to emphasise the importance of farming and other practical skills through the creation of an education centre for sustainable living.

Join us for lunch

monkton-wyld-court-pizzaThere are regular chances to visit the Court by coming to one of our monthly Local Lunches – this includes a delicious vegetarian 2-course meal, cooked in our Victorian kitchen using fresh organically produced ingredients from the Court’s own walled garden, orchard and dairy farm and from other local producers. We cater for all sorts of special diets on request. We also offer a tour after the lunch if people are interested. Local lunch costs £8 for adults and £4 for children. Booking is necessary – phone 01297 560342 or see our website for details.

Join us for a party or event

Monkton Wyld Court is a fantastic place for school trips or children’s birthday parties, with plenty of space to run around, climb trees or even make your own pizzas and bake them in our outdoor pizza oven. We have also hosted weddings, wakes, anniversaries and all sorts of celebrations, and can provide catering for up to 40 people or liaise with other local caterers for larger, non-residential events.

Join us as a local volunteer

We also welcome volunteers to come and work in our gardens, house and grounds, either for a 2-week residential stay or, if you are local, on a regular basis for a morning or afternoon. We are especially in need of a volunteer to help us with our book-keeping at present. See our website for details!

Join us for a course

We run a whole range of informative and inspiring day, weekend or 5-day courses, from scything to willow weaving, low impact timber building, stone carving or how to keep a house cow! Our seasonal “family weeks” are lively and popular, and we also host children’s forest school activity days in the school holidays. See our website for our full course schedule!

Join us as a community member

monkton-wyld-court-cowWe are currently recruiting community members in a variety of positions, particularly admin, housekeeping and gardening – more details on current positions on our website. If you feel curious about life in a working community, get in touch and come to visit!

So whether you for lunch, an overnight stay, for a course or as a volunteer, we hope you will enjoy the relaxing, friendly surroundings of Monkton Wyld Court. Either way you will experience a different way of 21st century living, one that we believe has a very positive future.
