askers_meadows_weirA planning application has been lodged to use Askers Meadows for "Temporary classroom for courses in traditional skills, dry stone walling and hedge laying and temporary parking for 100 cars on show field on Saturdays and for festivals between July- September"

It is not simply a field it is an ecosystem. Small plants, insects, birds and other animals use it as their habitat, compacting of the soil will also have an effect on the microorganisms in the soil.

richard-3rdIt was whilst on a visit to York that Arthur Woodgate discovered the link between Bridport and Richard the Third, popularly known as “The King in the Car Park.”

Now plans are afoot to commemorate the visit of the much maligned monarch. In the riverside gardens by East Bridge an information notice board identifies the location of the Priory of St John the Baptist just across the road, but gives no indication that this is where Richard is considered to have stayed.

After more than six years of project development, the Bridport Area Development Trust is in the final process of appointing contractors to begin work on the restoration of Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute.

The Grade 2* listed building in East Street has been empty since 1997 and is currently on the national At Risk register.  Initial clearing and tidying inside the building has already been completed and the architects have undertaken further studies and opening up works to inform the detail of the restoration and redevelopment.  Once the final drawings and costings have been completed, contractors will be confirmed, with a view to starting the main building work on site later this year.  In the meantime, the building will be protected to ensure there is no further deterioration to its condition.

Walking Tours around Bridport’s Past

This Easter Bridport Museum brings back our popular guided walks. They were very popular last year so we have decided that, in 2016, they should run in both the summer and the Easter school holidays. Bruce Upton, the Museum’s Community Engagement Officer, will lead participants around some of Bridport’s key sites in the town’s development from its Saxon origins through to the present day.
