Philippa Young art exhibition at Eype on 19th to 28th August. Philippa’s 2017 collection of paintings is inspired by the surrounding landscape and the sea. Depending on the atmosphere, light and subject she paints in either acrylics or watercolours, as for the style it can be impressionistic, realism or abstract, however the mood takes her which ultimately is revealed in her paintings. You are welcome to watch Philippa painting during her exhibition.

Book of Dorset’s Statues
A new book about Dorset’s statues has been published by West Dorset author Michael Russell Wood.
Dorset’s Legacy in Public Statues features some well-known figures such as Thomas Hardy in Dorchester and George III in Weymouth alongside lesser-known pieces including a skateboarder by the sculptor Greta Berlin in the garden of Wimborne Library and Eric Gill’s obelisk in Briantspuddle.

Clemance & Harland Viney
Two Bridport Museum artists are making their marks across the country this summer.
Nancy Clemance, and Harland Viney, who worked together in 2015 on ‘The Working End’, which was exhibited at Bridport Museum for six months, originally came together to explore the town’s rope and net heritage industry after being selected for a New Opportunities Award by New Expressions 3, a national programme to engage artists with museum collections.
Artist Opportunity
The Literary and Scientific Institute is looking to commission an artist to work with community groups to develop a permanent art installation reflecting the literary history and heritage of the LSI, for the interior of the lift carriage.
The project is part of the programme of heritage inspired activities for the restoration project.

Stainer’s “Crucifixion”
Come and sing Stainer’s “Crucifixion”, Sunday March 13th
As part of their 50th Anniversary Year celebrations The New Elizabethan Singers are inviting others to join them in a ‘come-and-sing’ performance of Stainer’s “Crucifixion”.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to sing a famous English classic in a big choir”, says Sandra Brown, Chair of the NES. “We last sang it in 1969 and this time we expect about 60 NES members to sing. We would love other choirs and individual singers to join us. We can provide copies of the music if needed and we can suggest free rehearsal aids if you’re unsure of your part.”

David West’s extraordinary talents both as a wood carver and as a painter have realised a visionary peacefulness and contemplative quality in his most recent work. Gilded carvings of the moon and of moonlight on the sea were the first signs of his bringing the mystery and wonder he discovered on a trip to Japan in 2008 back to his own surroundings here in Dorset and these have lead to a fascination with light on the surface of water in all its many manifestations.

The Literary & Scientific Institute fundraising is well under way to achieving its goal/ securing funds for the renovation of the East Street Georgian building, with work scheduled to begin in Spring 2016. Further fundraising, for refurbishment costs is ongoing and as part of that drive there is to be a SHORT STORY COMPETITION. Dorset writers are invited to submit a story (1,000-2,000 words) on any aspect of the building’s history. Stories can be a work of pure fiction or reflective of the activities that took place during its history:

Marzia Colonna
Art exhibition at Sladers Yard, opening this Saturday 19 September 2015 until Sunday 1 November.
Following a very successful solo show with the Portland Gallery in London last year, we are delighted to welcome Marzia Colonna back to Sladers Yard for a major solo show of recent collages and sculpture. Marzia lives and works in West Dorset. She draws inspiration for her collages from her surroundings in the coastal landscape here and in her native Italy, the flowers from her garden and the interior of her studio. Her sculpture evokes human situations and emotions. In this exhibition we will be focusing on her Lovers series.
