Annabel Davies from Churchill, near Axminster wowed the crowd and judging panel at the Open Mic UK Regional Showcase, and they are now one step away from performing at The O2 in London!

Thousands of acts entered Open Mic UK 2013 and the best unsigned singers from across the country were chosen to perform at the live Regional Final shows. Annabel performed in front of a capacity audience and professional judging panel on 3^rd of November at St George’s in Bristol. They ‘re now set to perform at the Area Finals for the chance to progress to the National Grand Final within The O2 in London on 18^th January 2014, where they will be fighting to win a £5000 cash prize to spend on the development of their act.

The Pickwicks are the brainchild of Bridport guitarist, singer and songwriter Declan Duffy. The constraints of the acoustic singer-songwriter format, allied to a wide set of influences, have always encouraged Declan to broaden the scope of his music as much as possible. Principal influences are The Stone Roses, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Atlantic/Stax and other old soul, the Happy Mondays/Black Grape, film scores and The Pogues, to name only a few (along with a lifelong love of old country music, but only the most real, of course).

The songwriting vison of Matt Boulter (lead vocals and guitar) and Dave Giles (piano and accordion) focuses on literate ragged alternative country, influenced by the Band, Tom Waits and the spaghetti westerns of Ennio Morricone. Boulter, who also tours with Simone Felice and Duke and the King, posseses an urgent soaring voice, often compared to Mike Scott from the Waterboys. He’s backed by Jim Wilson’s flying fiddle and banjo, which gives the band their signature sound. Giles adds accordion, organs and clattering bar room piano. Will Bray’s thundering drums and Ambrose P. Ambrose’s upright and electric bass give the swing.

Phil and Martin have made a name for themselves with their energetic and lively performances, and I caught up with them to talk all things Bridport, with a sprinkling of musical interrogation.

Talented up-and-coming musician Oscar Everard is now playing regular gigs since his first solo performance at No. 10 Cafe Bar last April.

16 year old Oscar is a versatile guitarist and singer-songwriter; his style is an eclectic fusion of blues, rock, reggae, dub and country with inspiration taken from the likes of The Beatles, Robert Johnson, Bob Marley, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Chuck Berry to name but a few! Oscar’s amazing guitar playing is accompanied by quirky vocals and harmonica on both his own material and his original take on covers. Check out ‘Penknife Blues’ on YouTube for some original slide style and ‘Pointless’ for his songwriting skill. He also uses some interesting techniques to create some astounding experimental instrumentals.

Local singer/songwriter PJ Harvey has won the 2011 Mercury prize with her fantastic album “Let England Shake” This is the second time she (or anyone else for that matter) has won this prestigious music industry award. The last time PJ Harvey won the Mercury Prize, the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks stopped her from flying from the US to London to accept the award.
