In December 2008 cats eyes and white lines along the coast road (B3157) were removed in an effort to reduce roadside clutter, also the speed limits were revised along this stretch of road between Bridport and Chickerell.This was to be for a 6 month "route safety study". After numerous accidents attributed to the lack of road markings the DCC has not seen fit to replace markings and other road furniture.
Now we all know this is a spectacular piece of highway both for the views and for the driving with it's twists, turns and blind summits. It is also prone to fog, mist and rain, so the question we ask the DCC is
ARE YOU FREAKING MAD!?
Or perhaps they just don't care, either way that road needs cat's eyes and road markings to be safe. What do you think? Register / logon and make a comment below

Three accidents in as many days this road needs road markings and Robert Smith (the council’s road safety team manager) needs a kick in the A***! He says “”95% of accidents are from driver error”” – of course they are – “”I crashed because I was slightly over the (non existent) centre line as was the person coming the other way”” _ Kerblammo! Smith has probably never driven the coast road, maybe never driven at all – okay maybe on his Playstation where you have multiple lives. So DCC Getr real before more people are hurt.
Fully agree with shibby above.. I think we should make him drive it at night in the fog 4 or 5 times and see how he feels after that! How can not having the lines be more beneficial then having them there. Its like taking the lights of a runway and telling the planes to slow down! ARRG, hold me back guys, hold me back! 😛

Funny that the accidents that have happened recently, from the News pics, all happened on sections with white lines!! I think Mr Smith is right actually a lot of accidents are caused by people snorting up our white lines and driving….as pure as the driven snow…aaahhhh….ahhhhh…white lines…going through my mind…..whoever snorted the lines on the coast road must have had one hell of a party!!!!!

I suspect that the REAL reason for the removal of the white lines is that it will reclassify the level of road maintenance that is required and therefore will save money (at the cost of lives). Reclassifying the road to a ‘lane’ will mean that maintenance will be every 20 years instead of every 5.
Ed lol@vid could have been the idiot that overtook me and 2 other cars today on the coast rd, the last on a blind bend! Then the media blame the road! White lines are really going to stop someone who is intent on driving back from the pub after 10 pints aren’t they? And of course putting in a low speed limit is going to slow the traffic down isn’t it? Most of that road is fine if driven between 50 and 70mph.
