A singing group for people who can’t sing is being started by Bridport & District U3A. There are plenty of choirs and societies in West Dorset for people who can sing. But what about something for those who lack confidence or think they have a voice that could frighten horses? They’re sending out an SOS – Save Our Singing? For them, U3A’s new group will hit just the right note.
“We have had a lot of interest from people wanting to join the group,” says co-ordinator Lesley Archibald. “You could describe it as singing for the terrified. But we believe that it will give people confidence and help them find their own voice.”
The Bridport & District group has been boosted by a surge in new members and the launch of new interest groups as a result of a getting-to-know-you recruitment party held at St Mary’s Church Hall, Bridport. More than 70 people came along to meet members of the steering committee and leaders of some of the existing groups, such as bird watching, books, maths for fun, French conversation and fossil hunting. Seventeen new members signed up to join, while other new groups being launched include Italian, philosophy and arts and crafts, as well as singing.
Colin Tincknell, U3A’s South West trustee, has presented a certificate of full membership of the Third Age Trust to Bridport & District, which also covers Burton Bradstock, Beaminster and surrounding villages. The presentation was made to Jan Kelly, chair of the steering committee. The group, launched in January, has become the fastest growing in the South West, with more than 180 members.
