LYRIC THEATRE LAND?

The Lyric theatre up for sale as 'LAND'. The Lyric Theatre (Formerly Bernard Gale's School Of Dance) in Barrack Street is being advertised by agents Goadsby And Harding, as 'LAND' For Sale? Correct me If I'm wrong, but didn't I see a dirty great stone LISTED BUILDING standing on that very spot for the last thirty odd years of my life? What corrupt game is taking place here. Could it be the planners are scratching each others back again, maybe hoping no one will notice.

FISHING RESULTS

WEST BAY SEA ANGLING CLUB JURASSIC OPEN BOAT FESTIVAL – SPONSORED BY ATLANTIC FISHERS

Saturday 14th October 2006 saw the start of the two day Jurassic open boat festival at West Bay sponsored by Atlantic Fishers. This match was rescheduled from the 30th September 2006, as due to the weather it was cancelled for safety reasons, but Saturday 14th October dawned with a force 3-4 wind coming from the east, the sky was overcast with the sun breaking through later in the day. On the Saturday we had thirty five competitors fishing from fourteen different boats. The mayor of Bridport set the boats off at 10.00am for the start of the match, it was a wonderful site seeing all the boats steaming out through the magnificent harbour of West Bay as they headed out to their chosen fishing spots to try and bag a prize from the array of prizes up for grabs. Daily the competitors could win a prize for the best two different species % of specimen 1st, 2nd & 3rd, also they could win a prize for the most species 1st, 2nd & 3rd, there was also a prize for the best Lady & Junior and as only one Lady & Junior entered they were guaranteed a prize as long as they caught a fish.  Our sponsor Mr Richard Allen from Atlantic Fisher decided to do a spot of pleasure fishing whilst at West Bay promoting the Atlantic Fisher 550. He did manage to catch a few Mackerel.

BRIDDERS ON TV

beep

We are growing excited by the increasin use of Bridport in TV and the media, why only the other day I was watching a Divvy Dee called Confetti (starring Tim from the office) and in it a couple of nerdy characters mentioned Bridders in a slightly derogatory fashion, we are all aware of West Bay as the setting for harbour lights and Huge Fearless Whitingsthorpe eating all of our road kill live on Channel 4, but can you recall any other incidences of Bridport in the movies or the TV? Was an episode of The Professionals filmed in Gundry Lane, are the rumours of Woody Allen scouring the area for locations true? Is Deal or No Deal recorded live at DaVinci's? Join in with your TV and Bridderwood memories and rumours and win a shiny new Bridport Radio MikkiMug (limited amount left)

BACCY TIN SAVES LIFE

Bridport boy Richie Cupcake had a brush with death last weekend whilst exploring a derelict church in Essex the stone staircase he was on collapsed sending him plummeting 25 feet to the ground amidst tumbling masonry and ironwork. Richie escaped with multiple cuts, cracks and contusions, his baccy tin fared less well, but saved him from a being stabbed in the chest by a piece of ironwork protruding from the wall. The baccy tin was not the only hero, Bridport Radio member StretchyNuts was on the scene and managed to pull Cupcake free before more falling masonry avalanched down.

ROAD TO RUIN

Did anyone notice the diversion signs on the roads to and from Beaminster recently? of course you did, there they were – big ones, small ones, drunks fighting with them over the weekends. Wow, thought this citizen they really must be doing a proper job on that piece of road through Salwayash on up to Broadwindsor which has been only recently so shoddily resurfaced and patched (twice) because of the cheapskates who will not use a fixative in the tarmac so a with bit of warm weather the road ends up sticking to your tyres.

FRIENDS of the MILL

The Mill, the young peoples’ coffee bar, advice and information centre on the corner of North Street and Rax Lane is in its 12th year.  As a registered charity they rely heavily on volunteers to run sessions and do the fundraising. So they had the idea that if 500 people in Bridport became a ‘Friend of The Mill’ for just £5 per month (or more if anyone chose) our money worries would be over! We could also extend our services further and the People of Bridport would share ‘ownership’ of The Mill.

INTREPID TEAM

Team Dorwest

The intrepid “Team Dorwest” completed the Coniston Challenge for Guide Dogs on Saturday 2nd September despite having to undertake the three tasks in the most appalling weather they'd experienced in the Lake District for a long time.  They climbed the Old Man of Coniston, cycled through the Grizedale Forest and canoed across Lake Coniston in just over 5 hours and were the 8th fastest team to finish.  The rain didn’t give up at all during the day and the six team members from Dorwest Herbs, based in Shipton Gorge, were all soaked through within ten minutes of starting the challenge.

CHAV BIRDS

bloated gull

Have four resident chimney-gulls and two young'ns on our roof in centre of Bridport. In the last year have noticed their presence daily. In fact, they, like me, would probably consider taking a towel or fishing rod to the beach, being so landlocked and townie. I doubt whether they ate fish, or visited the sea more than me this year. I hope I ate less chips than them.

FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHT

"I’ve Got My Tooth In My Hand!" The war cry from a stripy topped chav after playing a major part in starting a 12 person brawl on East St Friday. His small sports topped accomplice and their collection of underage friends slunk off as the police car approached 20 minutes after this resident called. The one police sergeant in attendance spoke to an onlooker as one group departed for the oak.

SLEEPY BRIDPORT?

Is there anyone else out there who was shocked at the news reports of the stabbings in East Street? I don't mean shocked at the event (everyone was) but at the subsequent painting of Bridport as something out of 'The Darling Buds of May'? Are you fed up with people in the media creating the perfect rural picture whenever they report from a small town in the West Country.

CARNIVAL PICTURES

Bridport Carnival Committee Ltd would like to thank everyone who has shown their support in any way and is grateful to all those who took part in last weekend's events. Saturday saw the biggest crowd we think we've ever seen and on Sunday we had the most attendance at the fete for many a year, sold the most torches ever and had the biggest crowd in West Bay at the end of it. Who could ask for more than that?

Below are some photos sent in by BridportRadio members

FLOWER POWER

Tuesday 26 July '06 Harbour Amusements, West Bay has been given an ultimatum by the West District Dorset Council to remove flower baskets that it has installed outside its premises within 24 hours or, say the Council "We will destroy them." The perpetrator of this hideous crime to society Mr Parkin said "It's madness, we won the Bridport in bloom competition last year and have recieved nothing but complements about them, especially from the people at the nearby old folks home."

SAVING GREEN SPACES

Surrounded by such beautiful countryside it’s easy to become complacent about the green spaces that weave there way into and through the town.  Where would we be without Askers Meadows or green corridor that follows the course of the River Brit?  These all make Bridport what it is, a market town inextricably linked to the countryside, each coexisting in harmony.

STREETS OF SHAME

On any bin day and the night before the streets are strewn with rubbish – rotting potato peelings, decaying chicken carcasses, crispy condoms, festering sanitary towels, stinky nappies and all manner of detritus which covers the roads and pavements forcing pedestrians to take evasive action or risk soiling their shoes/wheels on last weeks leftovers. So whose fault is it?
