Dorchester’s vibrant literary tradition returns to the spotlight this Summer as applications have officially opened for the next Bard of Caer Dur, inviting voices from across West Dorset to step forward.
The Bard of Caer Dur (Dorchester and West Dorset) is a unique and evolving title awarded each year to a poet, storyteller, musician, or spoken word artist who brings imagination, presence, and a strong sense of place to their work. Part laureate, part performer, and part community bridge, the Bard plays a vital role in celebrating local heritage while shaping new cultural conversations.
The search will culminate in a free, public final at The Corn Exchange, Dorchester, on Sunday 13th September 2026 from 2–5pm, where shortlisted finalists will perform live before a panel of five distinguished judges drawn from the region’s literary, musical, and cultural communities. Audiences are invited to attend from 1.30pm.
Current Bard Rebecca Danicic, who will host the event and ceremonially hand over the Bardic Chair, reflected on the role:
“It has been a profound and life-shaping honour to serve as Bard of Dorchester. This role has connected me more deeply to the people, stories, and spirit of the region than I could have imagine. I look forward to welcoming the next voice who will take up the chair and bring their own vision to this vital ancient tradition.”
Organisers are keen to emphasise that there is no single way to be a Bard. Applications are open to anyone aged 18 or over, from any background or experience level. Poets, musicians, storytellers, spoken word artists, and experimental performers are all encouraged to apply, whether emerging or established.
Supported by Dorchester Town Council and overseen by The Jawbone Collective CIC, the Bardic Seat continues a rich lineage of storytelling in Dorset — from Hardy to contemporary voices — celebrating creativity as a living, communal force.
