The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012 London Olympics because they are deemed 'too British'.
Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be 'offensive' to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team 'too militaristically British.'
Red Arrows pilots were said to be 'outraged', as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being 'too British' is an insult – the Arrows are a symbol of Britain.
The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world.
The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly spectacular.

The flag of the union has been hijacked, and have heard that some ethnic minorities actually do find it offensive, and this country is becoming multi cultural, so maybe a new flag, nobody ever knew what way to hang it anyway. the olympic logo, looks like it was made rather quickly with fuzzy felt on a rainy afternoon, does anyone actually own up to the task?
The Red Arrows are fantastic and probably use less fuel than shipping a pallet of Kiwi fruit across the world to end up rotting on Morrisons shelves, I know which I’d rather see/fly with. I am no xenophobe but if some people find the Union flag offensive then they are fools to get upset about coloured fabric.
I agree Draino. This team have been flying for more years than I care to remember, and have perfomed all over the world. These guys were the inspiration for the film Top Gun. We have a minoritory group (possibly illegal immigrants) trying to dictate what we can and cannot do. I like you am not xenophobic and I am not racist as I hate all foreigners the same. bring back British rule to Britain.
I love the Red Arrows and now i really do think we should call them the British Arrows. and the flag of our country (although slightly tattered by right wing organisations) has led all BRITISH campaigns since before the 1800’s (i wont pretend i know more than i do). personally if you don’t like OUR (Britain’s) flag and you find it offensive, don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out. i am offended by the non British attitude of some people but i don’t go around banning them (yet)
Have the Chinese been banned from using riot police and tanks during this years olympics? If not why not, as the UK’s greatest export (the red arrows)cannot perform a peaceful aerobatic display in 2012 in their own country due to beaurocratic idiots? Boycott China I say. Incidentally, I’m ex RN.
Following my last comment. According to one of todays Sunday papers, Beijing police are banning women wearing mini skirts, topless men showing ‘man boobs’, and large banners, (smaller than the ones shown at our football matches). Will it also be a crime to cheer any team apart from the Chinese? Hey Bat, have you got a weapon that will reach Beijing from the town hall and nuke them before the British contingent get there? A bit of forward thinking, will they try the same strong arm tactics in 2012?
Strong arm tactics as in nuking us before they arrive? Doubt it. They spent a lot of money preparing to win all the gold medals. Unless that was what they MEANT us to think… So basically the Chinese are banning microskirts (are they leopard print?) and fat men with no shirts on. Chavs, then. And you are complaining about this?
