Poetry Evening with Margaret Eddershaw: 25th August 8pm
As part of Spirit of Bridport’s Festival of Culture, Sladers Yard will be hosting award-winning poet and actor Margaret Eddershaw, who will perform classic Greek poetry alongside original work inspired by the current Vanessa Gardiner exhibition.
The poetry will be a perfect companion to the bold and rigorous Olympian landscapes created by Vanessa in her second solo show at Sladers Yard – ‘Classical Elements.’ Margaret will also include a selection of her own poems that respond to the classical architecture and history of Greece.
As a poet Margaret has won over twenty prizes, including first prize at the Wells Literature Festival, 2012. She has given readings in Athens and London and her first full poetry collection will be published in 2013.
As an actor with over 25 years’ experience, Margaret is also an engaging reader of her own work. She has performed in numerous London Shakespeare productions, taken three one-woman shows to the Edinburgh Festival and performed in the popular soap, Coronation Street.
In 1995, Margaret took up residence in Greece and began writing poetry. Since then she has had 150 poems published in magazines and anthologies.
Since 2008, she was become known for her suites of ‘performance poems’, one-hour shows, that combine her skills as poet and performer. Her Brief Encounters and Astley’s Last Ride were commissioned by and presented at Chester Literature Festival (2008, 2009). The latter suite also appeared in London and will be part of the Strasbourg Poetry in Performance Festival of 2013. Margaret’s third suite, Notes for a Nightingale, about Florence Nightingale, premiered at Lancaster Litfest in 2010, and then appeared at two London venues in 2011. Her latest one, Darlings, Angels and Fallen Women, comprises 25 poems in the voices of 8 women in the life of Charles Dickens. This will be performed in London and Helsinki this autumn.
Much of Margaret’s writing stands on the foundation of a long academic career in the Theatre Studies Department at Lancaster University, where she published on Brecht, Stanislavski and 19th century British theatre history.
