Showcasing his acclaimed new album, ‘None the Wiser’ the Chris Wood Trio plays at the Electric Palace, Bridport on Friday 10th May
Folk maestro Chris Wood has been nominated for BBC Folk Award 12 times and received six awards from just three albums. His brand new, fourth, album ‘None The Wiser’ was released to great acclaim at the end of March; he is now touring the UK with his trio showcasing his new work.
Joan Armatrading was so taken with Chris’ writing she invited him as special guest onto her 50-date UK tour in 2012. During the Armatrading tour, he travelled the country, eavesdropping on conversations from pound shops to tea rooms, army recruiting centres to hotel saunas collecting ‘the poetry of recession’. His response was ‘None The Wiser’. Like all of Chris’ work this album has the feel of a social document. Bass and Hammond organ are called in to drive a bunch of short songs off the page and into the world. This – Chris’ fourth – album is described as “fiscal and political meltdown feature but in a more robust way – this is almost like a pub band singing hymns and anthems”.
Justin Mitchell (Keyboards/Trumpet) and Felix Krish (Bass) join Chris as he sings humble hymns and sweeping statements. From Alzheimers to William Blake, Chris lovingly takes the pulse of his homeland and translates it into what could be his best album yet.
Chris Wood Trio’s performance at the Electric Palace will be supported by The Douglas Firs – a sublime acoustic duo from Bournemouth whose love of nature is reflected in their song writing. Described by Purbeck Folk Festival’s director as ‘one of the finest songwriting duos in the South’, the Firs have been spreading their roots on the live scene for over four years; playing to growing audiences around the UK at shows and festivals. With their influences ranging from the classic songwriters of the 60s to contemporary nu-folk artists, the crystal clear and sometimes ethereal vocals from Suzy Douglas combined with the delicate guitar work from Jimmy Douglas help weave the stories in their songs that creates their distinctive sound.

The opera that conquered London in Handel’s time comes to the Met in David McVicar’s lively production. The world’s leading countertenor, David Daniels, sings the title role opposite Natalie Dessay as an irresistibly exotic Cleopatra. Baroque specialist Harry Bicket conducts. David Daniels and Natalie Dessay star in David McVicar’s innovative production of Handel’s most popular opera in the final live transmission of the 2012-13 Live in HD season. The staging, a hit at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2005, comes to the Met for the first time with its clever blend of dramatic storytelling and witty touches, including extensive choreography by Andrew George. Baroque specialist Harry Bicket leads an extraordinary cast that also includes Alice Coote in the trouser role of the Roman youth Sesto, Guido Loconsolo as the scheming Egyptian general Achilla, John Moore as the Roman general Curio, and three stars of McVicar’s original Glyndebourne production: Patricia Bardon as the Roman widow Cornelia, Sesto’s stepmother; Christophe Dumaux as Tolomeo, Cleopatra’s brother and co-ruler; and Rachid Ben Abdeslam as the Egyptian servant Nireno. Soprano Renée Fleming hosts the transmission and conducts backstage interviews with the stars.
