Brendon Murless – sculptor (Venue 133 in DAW catalogue)
Delphine Jones – illustrator (Venue 135 ” “)
at Miles Cross Enterprise & Education Centre, Symondsbury, Bridport DT6 6AE
Bridport artists Brendon Murless and Delphine Jones will be taking part in the UK’s biggest open studios event, the biannual Dorset Art Weeks, with a joint exhibition at Symondbury’s Miles Cross Farm.
Sculptor Brendon Murless‘ art work originally stemmed out of his specialised trade in traditional and decorative plaster work. He grew up in Powerstock and with a life-long love of the rural landscape surrounding him, developed a unique, artistic approach to natural earth plasters, sculpting relief images freehand in cob, lime plaster and stucco, often depicting flora and fauna. He then branched out into woodcarving, taking the human form as a starting point, creating bold silhouettes, flowing contours and an abstract twist. Brendon’s unique work is increasingly in demand, with work exhibited in galleries and commissions from the National Trust and private clients across the country. A wide variety of Brendon’s work will be on display at Miles Cross Farm for Dorset Art Weeks during which time he will also be sculpting on site.
Exhibiting alongside Brendon, freelance illustrator Delphine Jones will display a new body of drawings exploring insects. Having collected perished butterflies, moths and bees she has found over the past year on windowsills, pavements and anywhere else, Delphine put the insects under the magnifying glass to create detailed ink drawings with splashes of colour, using the pages of old books as her canvases. Since graduating from the (then) Arts Institute at Bournemouth with a degree in Illustration in 2006 Delphine has worked full time within the Dorset arts scene, and also undertaken a variety of graphic design and illustration commissions for clients both locally and nationally, including Alice Temperley and Clarks.
The pair’s joint exhibition at Miles Cross Farm will be open daily from 26 May–10 June, 10am–5pm (closed 1–2pm). To get there, take the turning to Symondsbury nearest to the A35; the farm buildings are shortly on your right, by the dovecot. Look out for the red and yellow DAW signs, venue number 133 / 135.
