Dorset Coast Etchings

One of Dorset’s most popular artists, Julian Bailey is launching his new drypoint etchings at Sladers Yard this Christmas. Some coloured by hand and some in black and white, the pictures have his usual joie de vivre and economy of line, while offering all those who love Julian’s work an opportunity to buy at an affordable price.

Julian lives with his wife and four children outside Dorchester.  He travels the Dorset coast with his VW camper and his sailing dinghy, often drawing the cliffs  from the sea.  His clear colours and simple very effective drawings made him successful from the start.  His first solo exhibition was in Malvern Town Library when he was just 17.  At 30 he was taken on by Browse and Darby in Cork Street, London, where he has had five solo shows.  Before he came to Dorset he painted London’s café society in Notting Hill before it became recognised.  His work has always celebrated his subject matter, showing people enjoying themselves and the world at play.

Julian Bailey’s first major solo exhibition in Dorset was at Sladers Yard in 2008 and his next will be at Sladers Yard during the Olympics in 2012. Beautifully printed facsimile editions of Julian Bailey’s Dorset Sketchbook and Julian Bailey’s People Sketchbook are available at £100 for a pair. There are also a selection of 24 different greetings cards and six different postcards. His oil paintings and pastel drawings are always available from Sladers Yard and can be viewed by appointment or online. The new etchings are printed by Julian himself in editions of 12, prices for framed pictures range from £155 to £285.

Also on show at Sladers Yard are works on paper by Vanessa Gardiner, Alex Lowery, Gerry Dudgeon and Kate Lynch with furniture by Petter Southall and many gifts and accessories by leading British designer craftspeople and artists.

Julian Bailey’s etchings are at Sladers Yard, West Bay, Bridport, open through the holidays until 8 January and by appointment thereafter. Some of the works can be seen online at www.sladersyard.co.uk.
