Road for the Future

Adam Chodzko will be giving a talk, illustrated with slides and film clips, about the work he is making in response to Powerstock Common for the Road for the Future project.  The talk is free and there is no need to book.  Refreshments will be available.

Adam Chodzko’s art explores the interactions and possibilities of human behaviour.  For this new work, he is interested in the “specificity” of Powerstock Common. It is precisely nowhere else in the world.  It is just here. Now.  But it exists in its “now” form through a long history of growth and decay.  And so I wonder about what those particular transformations might become in the future.

Imagining the Common’s future, Adam Chodzko is creating an online collection of videos showing hiding places on this land, making available these very particular sites to anyone, globally, as though, through the act of uploading images of its land, the Common begins to float as an island above the earth.  Pushing the reality of Powerstock Common into science-fiction in a second work, Chodzko envisages the visuals for a private bank’s misguided attempts to build a financial institution on this Common Land.

Road for the Future is a collaborative art project, based at Powerstock Common, which looks at our ideas about the countryside, transport and access, and contributes to the debate about its future sustainability. These talks introduce the artists to an interested local audience leading up to the showing of their final works on June 2+3 this year.  The project is working closely with the Dorset Wildlife Trust and the proposed multi-use Maiden Newton to Bridport Trailway being developed by Sustrans.
