Award-winning poet, playwright and broadcaster Simon Rae will be returning to Sladers Yard on Friday 6th July to present an evening of his own poetry. The night will provide a chance to enjoy supper in the company of a natural raconteur, seasoned broadcaster and former presenter of Radio 4’s ‘Poetry Please!’
Simon’s play ‘Grass’ (Edinburgh Fringe Highlight Award) recently played to an intimate packed house at Sladers, and this is the first time he will perform his own poems at the venue. New work will feature.
Simon is a previous winner of the National Poetry Competition (and was twice runner up.) He is co-editor of the ground-breaking anthology ‘The 20th Century in Poetry’ (Ebury Press.)
His novel Unplayable, (2009) was Nicholas Lezard’s Choice in the Guardian Review, and for nearly ten years Simon wrote regular topical poems for the Guardian and published two collections of them, ‘Soft Targets’ and ‘Rapid Response.’
He also wrote the biography of the cricketer W.G..Grace, and has published several collections of poetry, most recently Gift Horses (Enitharmon Books.) His poems have appeared in a variety of publications including the TLS, Observer, New Statesman, Poetry Review and London Magazine. He has held Royal Literary Fund fellowships at both Warwick and Oxford Brookes universities and was also poet in residence at Warwickshire County Cricket Club.
Sladers Yard have a newly expanded Café and were winners of a Taste of the West Gold Award in 2010 and 2011. The cafe specializes in fresh, organic and locally grown ingredients, and serves homemade food at reasonable prices.
