Radio 4's 'With Great Pleasures' will be recorded in front of a live audience at the Electric Palace on Monday 10th August. Tickets are free but must be obtained in advance for admittance.
With Great Pleasure is the Radio 4 programme which gives a celebrity the chance to showcase some of the writing which has most moved, influenced or inspired them.
The first programme will be with the human rights activist and lawyer Clive Stafford Smith and the second with one of Britain's most respected contemporary novelists, Fay Weldon. The readers will be Pippa Haywood and Peter Marinker and the material will be thought-provoking and entertaining.
Fay Weldon
Fay Weldon CBE is an author, essayist and playwright whose work has been associated with feminism. Publishing her first novel in 1967, over the next 30 years she built a very successful career, publishing over 20 novels, collections of short stories, television movies, newspaper and magazine articles and becoming a well-known face and voice on the BBC. In 1971 Weldon wrote the first episode of the landmark television series Upstairs, Downstairs, for which she won a Writers Guild award for Best British TV Series Script. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1980 BBC miniseries adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
Clive Stafford Smith
Clive Stafford Smith OBE is a formerly based USA based British Lawyer who specialises in areas of civil rights and the death penalty in the USA. Since returning to the UK, he has worked as the legal director of ‘Reprieve’, a British charity that is opposed to the death penalty. From 2002 Clive Stafford Smith has volunteered his services to security detainees at Guantanamo Bay and has assisted in filing lawsuits on behalf of 128 detainees.
The Readers
English actress Pippa Haywood is perhaps best known for her award winning television performance as Joanna Clore in Green Wing whilst Peter Marinker is a Radio 4 regular with extensive radio, film and television credits.
