Story Cafe – Descent to the Underworld

Innana and Ereskigala – a descent to the Underworld

Sue Charman is a founding member of the Wood Sisters storytellers in South Devon. She returns to the Story Café at Bridport Arts Centre on Friday 27 September with a Sumerian epic tale. This ancient story has come down to us on clay tablets preserved for over 3000 years, but it is even older than that. Full of fascinating detail – and powerfully relevant to our lives today – this is the story of what we lose and what we gain when we enter the darkness.

Innana is the Queen of Heaven, Ereskigala rules over the Underworld –  what happens when the two sisters meet in Ereskigala’s Kingdom? The story begins with Innana’s childhood beside the rivers Tigris and Euphrates; sees her gain divine powers in a drinking match with her father; celebrates her ecstatic marriage to Dumuzid and follows her longing for yet more……

Doors open at 7pm and the storytelling begins at 7.30pm. The evening is suitable for adults and older children. Tickets are £7 / £6 members /£5 concessions available from Bridport Arts Centre on 01308 424204 or via the website www.bridport-arts.com
