Champagne Socialist or Working Class Hero?

Anonymous, vitriolic letters have been sent to Billy Braggs neighbours in Burton Bradstock calling him the “Village Idiot” and accusing him of being a hypocrite for living a celebrity lifestyle despite his socialist views.

In the past Bragg has campaigned against the Thatcher government and played benefit concerts for striking miners. More recently he refused to pay his taxes in protest of bankers’ huge bonuses.

Bragg accuses a disgruntled BNP member for writing the letter and urges all who received it to throw it in the bin.

You will be glad to know that this is not his second home.

Bragg has frequently come under attack for his outspoken views, what do you think? Champagne Socialist or Working Class Hero? Please leave a comment below.

  1. Shampoo socialist
Tricky for the Bragster, I think deep down he is a good bloke, the only thing he should do in a lot of peoples minds is give it all away and go and live under the arches at Waterloo, he’s stuck between a rock and a fortune. It ain’t easy being Billy. He’s a bit like a church, I saw him at the Electric for a charity gig and he was bloody good.

  2. Billy Bragg has absolutely gigantic house
I always imagined he lived in a terrace in a moderately gentrified part of east London, surrounded by people from a variety of cultures that he would ‘jam’ with and writing songs about the unfairness of everything…

  3. Champagne Socialist
Having read the so called “hate mail” I would say it’s more a statement of facts rather than hate mail! Billy is certainly a Champagne Socialist and hypocrite no doubt about that.

  4. Rebal without a cause?
My knowledge of music and Mr Bragg are minimal, however from what I’ve read of him recently (and the past) he seems to be a rebal without a cause. He neither fits into his ‘adopted’ west dorset, nor does he seem welcome in his home town of Barking. He would be better off keeping his head down and his opinions to himself, he might also find life to be more enjoyable. By the way, I’m 60 and can’t ever remember Mr Bragg singing a memorable piece……….

  5. Socialists are allowed to live
He’s done well for himself, so what?

I think some of his songs during the miners strike really hit the spot.

    Long live the Braggster

  6. Mr
Burton Bradstock is not what it used to be,most people are blow in’s from other places.
look at the village buildings, they are mostly commercial,up for holiday makers.
I remeber when the mill was working, before electricity arrived, 1 petrol pump,1 shilling a gallon

  7. Mr
What a bunch of moaners and bleaters, just because he’s well off and sticks to his principles obviously grates with some people, he got where he is through talent and hard work whats wrong with that? He is entitled to live anywhere, its his country just as much as yours.
