As part of the fundraising campaign to save Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute (the old library), Howard and Deirdre Coates are kindly opening the garden of Chideock Manor for a summer reception on Saturday 20 July from 5.30 – 8.00pm.
The garden, which has been featured in Country Life, has been totally restored and replanted since 1996, and is divided into a number of distinct areas. In front of the house is a formal broad grass terrace with fine views of the lake and hills. There are informal woodland and stream gardens, and the old walled garden is lined with productive cider apples and formal box-hedged vegetable beds. Guests will be able to stroll around the informal contemporary garden, croquet lawn, along the Yew Walk and Lime Walk and through colourful rose and clematis arches.
As part of the evening’s entertainment a short talk will be given by Dr Tim Connor. Dr Connor retired to Powerstock from Eton College, where he was Head of History and taught history of art. He has a particular interest in the architecture of churches and local historic buildings, including the much loved Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute.
