Film Society New Season

Bridport Film Society is pleased to announce its 47th season of contemporary world cinema.

In compiling the season more than 80 possible films were viewed, assessed and discussed by our programming committee. We believe that the final selection of 12 films truly represents the best of world cinema on your doorstep (all films are shown at Bridport Arts Centre) and at a great local price.

This year’s season has films from 10 countries. Notable highlights include Of Gods and Men, winner of last year’s Cannes Grand Prix Award; Winter’s Bone, a story of one girl’s courage set amidst a bleak mid-western US landscape; and Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Werner Herzog’s idiosyncratic exploration of journey visiting ancient cave paintings. Alongside the better-known titles proudly sit the hidden gems, those smaller, subtler, often surprising little films that rarely get shown outside the big cities. Take for instance, the black comedy of India’s Peepli Live; or the beautiful and poetic poetic Italian film exploring the rhythm of nature Le Quattro Volte; or Archipelago, a compelling family drama unfolding on the Scilly Islands.

As ever we hope that, in addition to offering opportunity for a fortnightly social gathering, the season will stimulate interest and discussion; the streets, not to mention pubs and cafes, of Bridport will be humming post-film with sharing of individual critical viewpoints.

Membership of the Film Society, which covers entry to all films, costs £30 (or £20 for a student) and usually sells out some weeks before opening night. To avoid disappointment, please apply early for your membership. An application form for membership and fuller descriptions of all of the 2011-12 season of films are available from our website www.bridportfilmsociety.co.uk  Paper copies of the 2011-12 season brochure will be available shortly from Bridport Arts Centre.
