The Lyme Regis Hub youth centre has just become aware of a fantastic opportunity to put solar PV panels on its new roof to generate its own electricity. British Gas in partnership with River Cottage, run by local chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal, are offering grants through their ‘Energyshare’ scheme to fund projects in the country that want to create clean renewable energy and reduce energy consumption.
The Hub would like to do this by putting solar PV panels on its new roof and insulate the building to reduce heating costs. Energyshare may pay for this if enough people tell the ‘Energyshare’ website they like the idea. The communities with the most support will be invited through to the next round. Looking at other projects, we have 2 days to get at least 500 people to support the Hub.

Once on the Energyshare homepage, you can find our project in the multi coloured ‘Up To £500,000’ section by typing in postcode DT7. Our project is called ‘The Hub Lyme Regis’. Its on the map or scroll down and click on The Hub. When on the Hub page, you can click on ‘support this project’. You will be asked to register with the website before support will be acknowledged. It takes a couple of minutes.
The Hub is making a dramatic last entry into the ‘Energyshare ‘ competition in order to be considered for funding. Up to £100,000 is available for a project.
Fund raiser Ayvin Rogers said, “We hope those who telephoned the lottery yesterday will also take a little time to register with the Energyshare website either today or tomorrow and support the ‘Hub Lyme Regis ‘project. Its another popularity contest – to be considered for funding we need to get about 500 supporters in the next 2 days and are hoping to ride on the momentum of enthusiasm just shown by the town and its friends. The Hub wants to thank everyone who voted with the lottery. A successful last minute Energyshare vote on will put the icing on the cake.”
Benefits of insulation and solar panels would be:
- Create an income by selling electricity (worth up to £4,000 per year) and increase The Hub’s economic sustainability.
- Reduce The Hub’s carbon footprint by using ‘clean’ energy and keep heat in.
- Heat insulation would double up as sound insulation, creating a better local environment for neighbours.
- Set a good example and help create environmental awareness for young people who use it.
