Dorchester couple Richard and Claire Budd, who are building Grace Secondary School in the Nuba Mountains of the Sudan, are looking for volunteers to help construct a traditional African mud hut – at Prince Charles’ Poundbury Village.
The project, at Weymouth College’s Dorset Construction and Training Centre, is part of the effort to raise money and awareness of the plight of young people with no access to secondary education. So far more than £48,000 has been raised to build Grace Secondary School.
Richard Budd said “The first mud hut will be built by as many volunteers as we can muster on the Saturday 29th August and Saturday 5th September. The second will be built by local school children during a weeklong series of events in October.”
There are a number of tasks related to the building including assembly of the roof supports using coppiced Hazel, mixing of mud, straw and sand for the Cobb blocks, making the Cobb blocks, roof thatching and building the walls – there will be experts on hand and you don’t need any special skills to take part.
