Dorset County Council has decided not to replace road markings and signs removed during the recent road works along the B3157 Coast Road. Instead they are to erect "No Road Markings" signs.
Opponents to the scheme call it "sheer lunacy" while proponents say "If you can't see where you're going – Slow down" The DCC will keep the new 40mph limit in place for the next 6 months to allow for a "route safety study."

I drive to work in Weymouth along the coast road, and I can assure anyone who is in doubt that in the dark and in fog (as we’ve had this week)without markings it’s terrifying. I heard someone saying that this is a really good idea, and that “”they’ve done it in Poundbury and it’s worked really well”” – Maybe so in a well lit urban environment, but not no a long, wind, exposed, dark road. I wonder who was consulted about this, certainly not those of us who use the road. I also wonder how many serious accidents it will take before the pinheads at the council realise the error of their ways (and I rather hope I’m not going to be one of those casualties).
I drive the Coast road to Weymouth most days, and due to my hours of work, this is mainly in the dark. I can’t believe that anyone who is proposing leaving this road in its present unfinished state can ever have driven along it on a dark or foggy night. Cars coming over crests, even on dipped lights are really dazzling, and without edge lines, studs, centre hazard lines etc. it’s not just a matter of slowing down a bit – I have several times had to make emergency stops when I have simply been unable to see where the road is. One of Dorset County Council’s stated principles (in the pamphlet “”Managing Dorset’s Rural Roads””) is “”Keep signs, lines and street furniture to the [u]minimum needed for safety [/u]and remove intrusive roadside clutter””. Dorset County Council should act on their own policy and put back the basic road markings before the roads become “”intrusively cluttered”” with bits of wrecked cars and floral tributes.
So being Mr Sensible I slow down to 20 mph because I can’t see where the **** I’m going. Another Mr Sensible no relation) is doing the same in the other direction. That’s only a 40 mph head on collision. Much safer than before. Plus we could have fun in adjacent beds at Dorchester comparing shin bones. It gets my vote!
