Hello. I am Anne Ludlow, Secretary of Sheltered Housing UK. (Reg. Charity No. 1137806)
On 12 May, I am setting out on a sponsored walk from the Valley of the Rocks in Devon to the Golden Cap in Dorset, the highest point on the south coast of Britain. (Terrain gradient ranging from ‘moderate’ to ‘severe/strenuous’.)
I am aiming to reach the finish point, the Anchor Inn in Seatown, on 15 May. (I’m hoping that my creaky old knees won’t give out en route, or the dogs will have to lug me the rest of the way.)
My dogs help out by clearing up any rubbish they find along the way
I am taking this walk to raise public awareness of the fact that thousands of OAPs all over the country have been left without the support, protection, and assistance they were promised when they moved into Sheltered Housing. Warden coverage has been cut to minimal hours or in some cases has simply disappeared altogether.
If elderly residents have an emergency, the “pendants” that are supposed to replace the warden’s human presence connect them through to a faceless voice in a call centre, which may be up to 300 miles away. The response is often, “I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do for you.”
And so the NHS and Emergency Services are left to pick up the pieces – at huge extra expense to the taxpayer. Please help us to end this policy of callously abandoning the elderly – it is a terrible betrayal of trust and a false economy!
Give Generously
I am seeking sponsors – any contribution, large or small, will be most gratefully received. All members of the Sheltered Housing UK team work on a purely voluntary basis, so 100% of your donation will be used to support our campaign.
