THE sounds of drums, cans, rattles and whistles will be heard in Bridport this weekend during a wassailing ceremony.
Bridport Community Orchard is hosting the event on Sunday, January 19th, from 3pm. People are invited to come along with anything that can make a noise to scare away bad spirits.
Wassailing in orchards is an ancient tradition, intended to rid the trees of evil beings and awaken the trees, ensuring a good harvest.
Wyld Morris will lead the music and dancing in Bridport, where hot cider and apple juice will be available.
Admission to the event – held in the community orchard behind St Mary’s Church, in South Street – is free, but donations are requested.
The group behind Bridport Community Orchard is holding its annual general meeting in Bridport Town Hall on Wednesday, January 22nd, at 7:30pm.
The group will be presenting a slideshow of information, and would like people to come along and tell them what they would like to see happen in 2014. Refreshments will be available.
