A professional theatre company with Dorset roots will premiere their brand new production on home turf this month. Angel Exit have created an original adaptation of the classic ‘Moonfleet’, which is deeply rooted within the rugged landscape of the Dorset coastline, and weaves together local legends, sea shanties and the hidden history of the area with J Meade Falkner’s popular novel.
Hilarious buffoons
A straggling bunch of hilarious buffoons are washed up amongst the flotsam onto the wild shores of Chesil Beach, and conspire to spin this yarn of a young orphan boy clashing with both smugglers and excise men in his quest to find Blackbeard’s lost treasure.
With four critically acclaimed theatrical productions under their belts, ‘Moonfleet’ will be presented in Angel Exit’s trademark physical ‘buffoon’ style, and will feature striking physicality, ensemble storytelling and puppetry to tell a thrilling tale of smuggling, dastardly deeds and wicked escapades. The aesthetic of ‘Moonfleet’ uses found objects; driftwood, rope and shells, washed up on Chesil Beach. Live sound-scapes of the coast are created with pebbles and water. The buffoon storytellers appear to have emerged from the sea, and they don period costumes to play larger-than-life characters and manipulate life-size puppets to tell this fearsome tale.
Angel Exit started working on Moonfleet with a ten-day residency at Dorchester Arts Centre, during which time they carried out site-responsive improvisations at The Fleet and met with local historians, enabling the troupe to create this wonderful Dorset production. The show, which is touring the UK, will be performed at three Artsreach venues this season, including the tour’s premiere. This is definitely one to watch!
