Bridport Gig Rowing Club members will be found amongst dozens of colourful gigs on East Beach at West Bay 11am – 2pm Sunday 25 April. Anyone interested in finding out about gig rowing and how to join this community project as a competitive rower, social rower or as part of the critical support and refreshments team will be very welcome.
Pupils from Symondsbury Primary School have been busy painting Bucky Doo gigs for the Beach Boats project and students from Mountjoy will kindly be providing photographs of the artworks for the BGRC website. Waitrose gave cardboard and local charity shops donated wire coathangers.
Prize for BGRC's Favourite Beach Boat
BGRC members Nancy Clemance, Jennie Hill and Lawrence Shillingford will steward the event and Chair Mike Carter will be present a prize of a model gig for BGRC's favourite Beach Boat at 12.30pm. The winning Beach Boat will also be referenced by our local signwriter who will paint the name 'Bucky Doo' onto BGRC's very first training gig as soon as she's delivered to Bridport.
Nancy Clemance said 'This is going to be a lovely, colourful spectacle for East Beach, and completely in keeping with the community nature of the club. I hope we meet lots of children and their families on the day. If we can recruit a few mums, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles or friends to row Bucky Doo this summer then we'll be in excellent shape for the arrival of our first racing gig next year.'
BGRC members will also be accompanying the Bucky Doo gig in Bucky Doo Square 8 May. Donations of pennies or pounds will be very gratefully received and used to purchase the wooden, racing gig.
