Bridport Museum 2011

Bridport Museum reopens on Monday 4 April 2011! Entry this year is still free. We have been busy over the winter period redecorating some of the upstairs display areas and mounting the new exhibitions for the season:

  • Bridport Faces: portraits of prominent town and country people from the museum’s collection
  • Bridport in 1911: snippets from the ‘Bridport News’ from 100 years ago.
  • The English Bible: to mark the 400th anniversary of the ‘Authorised Version’ of the King James Bible
  • World War I embroideries: embroideries made by a soldier while serving in the trenches during World War I
  • Wedding Wonderland: a display to mark the royal celebrations, (April-October only)
  • Wherever I Lay my Hat: an exhibition to celebrate the town’s Hat Festival (August – October only)

Dinosaur Arrival!

The most recent addition to our Jurassic Coast gallery is a large plesiosaur skeleton. Mounting this has been a ‘mammoth’ undertaking involving rebuilding a wall to take the weight of the display and its case.

Fun For All Ages

Our aim this season is to make learning more fun and hands-on for our younger visitors. There will be Victorian costumes to try on, as well as slates to write with and games to play. There is also a new interactive in the Roman galleries with Roman toys and a mosaic to design!

You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with events!

Friends of Bridport Museum

The support we receive from our Friends is invaluable. Each event helps us to continue to develop the  museum and the research centre. We are currently looking for general secretary to the Friends Committee. If you would like more information about how to get involved please contact the Local History Centre on 01308 458703.

Upcoming Events:

  • sartinBonnie Sartin, of Dorset ‘Yetties’ fame, is coming to sing and tell tales of Newfoundland on 27 April at 7pm. Tickets £8 in advance from Bridport Music or the Local History Centre.
  • The New Hardy Players will present Tess of the D’Urbervilles on the Millennium Green on 26 June at 6:30 pm. Bring your own rug or chair and picnic. The first 100 tickets (£8 in advance) will secure a seat in the W.I. Hall if wet.

A Warm Welcome To…

This February sees the arrival of two new members to our museum community. Ursula Mahoney  has joined us as a marketing and fundraising assistant, whilst Shannon James  has joined our team as an education assistant. The two positions are funded for 6 months under the “Future Jobs Fund” scheme run by Dorset County Council.
