House of Trees

On Saturday 26 January 2013 Sladers Yard will be hosting British/Swedish band ‘House of Trees” with Jack Cheshire (featuring local boy James Carnell), on a very special Winter Music Night which includes acclaimed British alt-folk troubadour Jack Cheshire.

Once upon a time some friends moved to a house made of, and surrounded by, trees. Situated deep in the Swedish woodlands the house is a hidden haven; a place where if no-one speaks one hears only the sound of birds, a river and the wind in the trees. There is also the sound of music…

Led by British singer/songwriter Rob Coe, House of Trees explore the myriad moods of life – thoughts, dreams, places and people – in their often mythical fairytale songs. Djamila Skoglund Voss’s earthy yet ethereal voice combines with Bridport-born James Carnell on percussion and Helena Sköld on violin.

As a live act the group bends and shapes itself depending on the climate of the concert: the atmosphere and emotion of their gigs is like a good home: warm and cosy on the inside but outside the wind and the dark are knocking on the door. The songs blend a heady mix of classical, folk and jazz music that draw parallels with Billie Holiday, Kurt Weill, and dark old-time Disney classics.

Jack Cheshire has been described by the Sunday Telegraph as “Hugely beguiling…Ludicrously underrated… You’ll adore it if you like Roy Harper, Nick Drake, Gravenhurst or Badly Drawn Boy… The lyrics are dreamlike and beautiful, and the melodies and arrangements get right under your skin.”

Bath-born troubadour Jack Cheshire’s sweetly-slurred melodies, kaleidoscopic finger-picking and intricately-layered musicbox psychedelia have invited comparisons with Syd Barratt, Arthur Lee, Radiohead and Beck, and have led to supports with the likes of Josh T Pearson, Roddy Woomble, Polly Paulusma and Kris Drever.
