A talk by Austen Hamilton MA – The 18th-Century Speculative House Builder – a Familiar Figure. On Thursday 11 April 2.30 opens at 2.15 at United Church Hall, East St. Bridport.
Coinciding with the recent commencement of one of the most extensive housebuilding operations in this locality for many years (even decades), the opportunity to bring in Austen Hamilton to speak to us about speculative builders was too good to pass up. Austen has been a student of urban history (principally London) for over 50 years. His work has also taken him into property development, albeit not housing, and has given him a different insight into some of the issues..
About his talk Austen says:
‘The “housing problem” has a long history, as has the role of the speculative builder in its solution. The development process has changed little over the centuries and a look at some of the players and controversies of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century housing development can provide an interesting sidelight on our own times.’ Austen will be talking mostly about speculative property developers in London.
