CAPTURED IN CLOTH with KATE DOWTY – April 13th -28th.
Free admission. Open daily 11am -5pm.
Kate is a contemporary textile artist who uses a mixture of improvisational techniques to create colourful wall-hangings.
This current collection of work celebrates locations close to her home where the landscape, the coastline and the colours of West Dorset provide on-going inspiration. The colour and movement of the sea, the textures of the stunning cliffs of the Jurassic Coast and the patterns created by the patchwork of small fields scattered over the hillsides are all included in the mix. Everything changes with the time of day, the weather and the seasons thus providing an endless source of opportunities for interpretation in fabric and stitch.
Some of the pieces are very simple, others are heavily embellished. All are colourful and demonstrate an enjoyment of the effects that result from adding dense stitching to cloth.
All of the work is for sale as are smaller pieces, cards and postcards.
THE RUSSIAN HERMITAGE ENSEMBLE – at St. Peter’s on Tuesday April 30th at 7.00pm.
The Hermitage Association, formed in St. Petersburg in 1997 to keep alive the great traditions of Russian sacred music and folksong, includes the finest soloists from theatres and concert companies of St. Petersburg – Kirov Opera and Ballet, Maly Opera Theatre, St. Petersburg Concert and others. Although touring the UK since 1998 this is their first visit to St. Peter’s.
The concert is in two parts, the first consisting of motets and liturgical settings from the Eastern Church written within the last 300 years. The Russian folk songs in the second part display a range of emotions and, with their rhythms and melodies, convey all that is characteristic of the great ‘Russian soul’.
The tickets are £10 available from the Bridport Tourist Information Centre at The Town Hall, Bridport and on 01308 424901.
