SIR ROY STRONG

We are pleased to be able to tell you that we have been able to arrange for Sir Roy Strong to talk at St. Peter’s on Saturday, March 29th at 3.30 pm about his latest book:

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH COUNTRY CHURCH

Sir Roy Strong says of the 10,000 country churches in England, “I believe that many problems could be solved today by giving the church building back to the local community, albeit with safeguards for worship…Change has been the life-blood of the country church through the ages. Adaptation will be more important than preservation.” This is a very apt commentary of what has taken place at St. Peter’s, Eype, in the last few years. His latest book is a delightful popular history of the English country church – from its origins in Anglo-Saxon times to its uncertain future in the twenty-first century. The journey is historical, social and spiritual, exploring what men and women experienced through the ages when they went to church on Sundays. It celebrates architecture and artefacts, ritual and ceremony in English country churches and makes a plea for their survival.

SIR ROY STRONG is currently High Bailiff at Westminster Abbey and an altar server at Hereford Cathedral. His books include The Story of Britain, The Arts of Britain, Feast: a History of Grand Eating and Coronation.

The talk is at 3.30pm at St. Peter’s, Eype followed by book signing and tea and cakes. Car Parking is in the field next to Eype church.
