Dorset Cultural Strategy 2009-2014
The draft Cultural Strategy is now available for consultation. A copy can be found at – http://www.dorsetforyou.com/index.jsp?articleid=364545
Development of the strategy has been led by the Dorset Strategic Partnership (DSP) Culture Theme Group and we are very keen to collect comments – a response form is available at the above link.
The process of preparing and developing this strategy has been as important as the resulting text.
The aim of the draft text is to take you through our journey so that you understand why we are now setting out for particular destinations. The destinations are our priority outcomes, and the routes to get us there are our action plans.
The final document will be illustrated with quotations, case studies and images. It is likely that in the final version some of the detail of the journey will be rerouted to the appendices, but in this draft document we hope you will find it helpful to take a fuller approach.

This workshop is for: communities and artists who wish to learn more about the Pride of Place Award, or who are just interested in utilising the arts to make our county a more vibrant and special place to live.
Every place has its own special qualities and we wish to champion the improvement and enhancement of the best of those qualities. The Dorset Design and Heritage Forum are looking for the local community, Dorset Parish or Town Council that takes the most pride in its local environment and heritage. The winning community will have the opportunity to work with an ‘artist in residence’ on a special project. The artist will enable the community to explore new ideas about identity and place that will lead to the creation of a positive enhancement of place.

John Lowe, Historic Environment Manager for Dorset County Council and member of the Dorset Design and Heritage Forum, and Kevin Morris, Policy Manager Conservation and Design for North Dorset District Council and Chairman of the Dorset Design and Heritage Forum will introduce the workshop and the ideas behind the Pride of Place Award, how it came about and why it's important to the future of Dorset.
- 11-00 – 11-45 Creative Communities
Jo Rose – local people have special knowledge and understanding about “their” place. Many have already found ways of creatively celebrating the uniqueness and the value they place on their locality, heritage and environment. The creativity of local communities can provide a rich resource for practising artists to work with.
- 11- 45 – 12-30 Socially engaged art
Alex Murdin, artist for Pride of Place 2008 and Creative Places Development Manager will give an introduction to the range and scope of contemporary artistic involvement in the public realm. Illustrated by examples of projects from across the UK the presentation will ask – can the process of an artist working with a community be an artwork in its own right and just as important as the end product ? He will also share some initial thoughts on the Pride of Place project for 2008 and the early stages of Turn Lyme Green’s project, using the arts to get across their environmental message to visitors and residents of Lyme Regis.

Workshop 1 – Artists in the Community
Led by Jo Rose, this workshop will explore a variety of ways that communities have undertaken their own arts and distinctiveness projects and worked with artists. A practical session will look at how communities can develop a Pride of place project and how to use the guidance notes to prepare an exciting proposal.
Workshop 2 – For artists
Led Alex Murdin this practical workshop will look how to apply for commissions of this type, including what the commissioners might be looking for, the development of a proposal, thinking through the early stages of engagement with the community and what the end results might be.

Artists take the lead in £5.4m project for Cultural Olympiad
Artists of all kinds from across the UK are being challenged to use the nation as a blank canvas for twelve inspirational commissions that will showcase our creativity to the world, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Artists taking the lead is the most ambitious and wide ranging art prize in the UK and is being developed by Arts Council England, in partnership with London 2012 and the arts councils of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
12 commissions of up to £500,000* will be awarded to create 12 new works of art across the country; one in each of the nine English regions, and in the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Artists taking the lead is the first of ten major projects of the London
2012 Cultural Olympiad to be launched. It provides artists across the country with an unparalleled opportunity to create work that celebrates the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games and reflects the rich cultural diversity of the UK.
From 19th March, until Friday 29 May 2009, artists can submit their ideas for the commissions online at www.artiststakingthelead.org.uk.
Arts Council England expects to announce the shortlisted artists in July 2009, and the final twelve commissions in October 2009. The successful commissions will be developed across 2010 and 2011, and all twelve will take part in a final unifying celebration before the opening of the London2012 Olympic Games.

Art Boot Sale is a monthly event happening on every last Saturday of the month in the Courtyard at The Study Gallery. The event is growing every month and proves to be an excellent platform for selling, networking and getting a genuine feedback.
One of the artists talking part said:
A lot of people liked my work so it was good to get that feedback. It's the first time I've shown my work to the general public so it's been really good for my confidence. I'd recommend this as a gentle way in for people showing and selling their work the first time. With it just being a couple of hours and £5 a pitch, it's a brilliant opportunity to test the water!

The New Scene – Purbeck Perspectives from Artists Under 35

The Aspiring Managers Development Programme 2009-2010
Starting in June 2009 £300 per person*
This year-long programme offers a unique development opportunity for owner managers, first level managers and supervisors in the tourism and hospitality industry looking to enhance their professional development.
The Aspiring Managers Development Programme has been developed by the Tourism Skills Network South West, is delivered by industry professionals and is endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality.
On completion of the programme participants will be able to:
- Build, motivate and maintain a successful team
- Lead with enthusiasm and confidence
- Generate new ideas and opportunities that will take their organisation forward
- Appreciate their role in the tourism and hospitality industry in the South West
- Develop their leadership qualities and become ambassadors for the region
Delegates completing the programme will also receive The Institute of Leadership and Management level 3 award in First line Management. Over 10 months, each delegate will attend six regional workshops in Somerset and six localised action learning groups.
*This programme has a commercial value of over £1000 per person. However through funding from the South West of England Regional Development Agency and Train to Gain, the Tourism Skills Network South West is able to offer

Your work will be installed in a live arts event arena with 10,000 bedazzled spectators.
The colours, size, location, illumination and perhaps most importantly, the interactive capacity is all key to how your concept will work in this vibrant environment.
We are able to offer artists a space of boundless potential. There are no size restrictions and we can discuss location to help develop the concept if it needs to interact with trees, rocks, lakes or natural obstacles.
We want your work to encourage the audience to explore, interact and become part of the art. Touching, climbing, entering – are all encouraged.
The Theme for BBL 2009 is: Myths, Fables and Legend – Think Narnia, Knights, Dragons, Swords, Castles, Armour, Goblins, Enchanted Forests, Fairies, Pixies, Labyrinths, Celtic Symbols, Stone Circles etc
We are interested in applications that complement, explore or represent these themes. If you want to build a ridiculously massive castle with surrounding moat and draw bridge, we will do our very best to help you recognise your vision, however big or small.

The Exchange
Set in the heart of the Blackmore Vale and overlooking the town of Sturminster Newton, The Exchange is a new centre functioning for the community as an arts centre and a learning centre. Artists interested in putting their work in front a wide and varied audience should therefore consider exhibiting in The Bibbern Gallery. With a glass wall looking out towards Hambledon Hill the Gallery is also home to the bar putting it at the centre of The Exchange. There is no charge for exhibiting but The Exchange operates a commission rate of 35% on sales.
