Artist’s Talk about Painting the Geology of Dorset Cliffs
Painter Paul Jones will give a talk on Perception and Process at Sladers Yard on Friday evening. Discussing the way he finds and selects his subject matter he will reveal how he transforms his perception into a completed painting. Paul’s solo show in the Rope Gallery at Sladers Yard is drawing the crowds, attracted by his gentle natural colours, strong sense of design and exceptional use of texture.
His work depicts cliffs, rocky outcrops and the sea. Although he has lived in North Devon for some years he still paints the Dorset coastline which he has walked and minutely observed for over thirty years.
Paul will also talk about his unusual technique of distressing and even setting light to his acrylic paint in order to create the texture of his work. His work is carefully planned in advance. He paints layers of colour on areas of the canvas board. If he allows the top layers of his paint to blister and burst, the lower layers are then revealed. Paul used to teach ceramics and his technique draws on that expertise as well as a fascination with the effect of controlled heat and fire on artwork that recreates the look and feel of ancient geological features.
Paul Jones’s Talk, Perception and Process, will be in the Rope Gallery at Sladers Yard surrounded by his paintings at 7.30pm, on Friday 15th April. The award-winning Licensed Cafe/Bar will open at 6pm and will be serving a pre-event supper. Please call Sladers Yard on Tel: 01308 459511 for tickets at £5 for the Talk or £15 with supper. www.sladersyard.co.uk
