Emerging Artists

Emerging Artists Showcase in the Allsop Gallery

Two artists will be sharing the Allsop gallery for two weeks, twice. An annual event taking place each spring, 2x2x2 is part of Bridport Arts Centre’s commitment to supporting the work of emerging artists in the region.

Of this year’s show Arts Centre Director Polly Gifford said, “This year 2x2x2 takes a different view of the idea of ‘emerging artists’.  All four artists are well established, but all have seen significant changes and developments in their work, and so it is their current practice that is emerging.”

The first exhibition will run from 30 March – 11 April and will feature Tara Harland Viney and Nicholas Kalinoski.

Tara Harland Viney works with film, performance, drawing and photography.. She is an artist who is drawn creatively towards doubt and uncertainty and her artwork is an attempt to transgress the beauty within her imagery with something more ambiguous and unsettling.

Nicholas Kalinoski is an American born artist who recently ended a decade long career in fashion, having worked for companies such as Karl Lagerfeld and Calvin Klein. “I’ve always considered myself an artist that happened to be employed in Fashion.”  His work uses a variety of materials, from traditional canvas and paints through the spectrum to plaster and sheepskin.  “There is also a graphic element to my work, which has always been a consistent theme for me. The fine art pieces I have been making over the last year and a half are in my mind ‘postcards’ for memories. Just really big postcards.”

There will be an opportunity to meet each pair of artists and hear about their work on Wednesday 4 April, 7pm, Free

Part two will run from 13 – 21 April and features Michael J Chappell and Charles Hallsworth.

Michael Chappell’s work is unrecognisable from what he was doing 12 months ago when he was painting from life, as now his work is about life. This paradigm shift in his work was brought about because of a visit to the Venice biennale where he saw the work of Fernando Prats. Influenced by Prats, Michael uses indexical work in the form of frottage to capture the genius loci of the enclosures he is referencing as a metaphor for disparate human emotions or characteristics.

Charles Hallsworth’s current work is based on the theme of Light and Water and in particular the forces hidden in waves and the light that interacts with them.  “I am referencing my own experiences and relationship with light and water, whilst attempting to demonstrate that modern digital technology changes and extends the way we perceive and observe the transience of the world so challenging the idea that memory and photography are accurate records of the ‘real’ world.  My research and studies have increased an awareness of ways of presenting and describing ideas that both expose my thoughts and provide a challenge to the audience to see again the familiar in a new context.”

There will be an opportunity to meet the artists on Wednesday 18 April, 7pm, Free.
