2x2x2 – Exhibition

Showcasing Two Artists for Two Weeks – Twice. This May Bridport Arts Centre launches a new slot for emerging visual artists from Bridport and around the region. 2x2x2 exhibition will feature two artists sharing the Allsop Gallery, for two weeks, twice.  Both exhibitions will offer audiences fresh, new ideas from artists who are exploring and developing their practice.

The first exhibition, from 10-21 May, will feature Alastair Barford and Wendy Poole. Alastair Barford’s work examines the ways in which information is communicated. Drawing on media imagery, particularly popular film, his work seeks to explore the complex relationship between representation and reality.  The exhibition will feature paintings and drawings that are beautifully realized, and which bring a new perspective to the familiar.

Wendy_PooleWendy Poole first painted while in hospital during a period of illness in 2002. Much to her surprise, she has never stopped, ‘It’s amazing – if you had said to me tomorrow you’re going to be able to fly a space ship to the moon it would be as amazing to me as starting to paint.’   Wendy works intuitively, and the resulting works are fluid, full of colour and multi-layered.  This is the first time her works have been collected together for exhibition.

The second exhibition, featuring Alice Jones and Jollyon Carter, will run from 24 May – 4 June. Alice Jones uses drawing as her primary means of expression, studying the human form, landscape and most recently the challenging subject of sleep. Her work plays between the delicacy and intensity of fine detail to capture a specific moment. Alice was Award winner of the Young Artist of the Year 2010 (Clarke Willmott law firm, Bristol) and Emerging Artist 2010 (RWA, Bristol).

Jollyon Carter lived in London prior to opening his Bridport studio in 2009 and more recently New York City where he studied at The New York Studio School.  His abstract works are a mixture of marks, rhythms and materials that collect together until the moment he feels they ‘come alive’. It is an organic and instinctive process, creating work that has a raw and emotional content.
