On Monday 11 November at 11.00am the maroon will go off in Bridport Town two minutes later it will sound again.
The audience in the Marlow Theatre in the Bridport Arts Centre will stand together to respect the passing of so many civilians and soldiers in wars over the past 100 years.
The silence will be followed by poems and songs that will reflect the impact wars have had on us all since 1914. David Bushrod, a local poet will read one of his own, Remembrance Day and poems by Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, including Dulce Et Decorum Est. Christine Prideaux has chosen a selection including Carol Anne Duffy’s wonderful response to this The Last Post. To lighten the mood and reflect on the civilian’s life here in West Dorset during the Second World War she will read a pair of poems by Joan Robins, a local poet who writes about wartime in Morecombelake with blackout curtains and the many uses of carrots! Margie Barbour will share poems from more recent wars as well as High Flight, chosen as her uncle who she never knew was a pilot killed in the early days of the war.
Emily Hicks will be joining the poetry readers to sing some beautiful songs reflecting upon the emotions of wartime, including If you were the Only Boy in the World and Roses of Picardy.
White poppies from the Peace Pledge Union will be available at the door on the day and the cafe will be open especially for the performance.
