The Big Picture

If you haven’t already seen Exploratory Laboratory at Bridport Arts Centre, what are you waiting for? The exhibition is a unique chance to see how scientists are exploring the coast through exciting technologies alongside work by artists using similar techniques. The result? An enthralling exhibition that gives you a whole lot to think about. How are we affecting the coast? How will it affect us? What do we do about it?

To help answer the questions (and pose some more questions back), the Exploratory Laboratory team have arranged activities for everyone, from families to artists, and young people to earth scientists.

Activities include Arty Science Notebook evenings on Wednesday 13 and 20 October where you can pick up a copy of the exhibition handbook (packed full of essays and information) and join people with an enthusiasm for the visual arts and/or earth sciences. Bring your friends and find an interesting topic for discussion in the pub afterwards.

For families, a Special Day on October 16 where you can attend one, two or even three, free, lively workshops exploring the exhibition. One in Sound – One in Writing – One in Art. Suitable for children 7-11 who must be accompanied by an adult. It’s gonna be popular so book your place through the Bridport Arts Centre box office on 01308 424204.

Other activities include My Labs and Art Boffins for anyone curious about exploring their own work through the exhibits, Ex Lab Symposium for artists and scientists and tours and talks every Wednesday at 11am and 3pm.
Exploratory Laboratory is the first stage of a project by Big Picture investigating the earth science and coastal processes along the Jurassic Coast through the imaginative insight of visual artists.  It will lead to new temporary artworks along the coast path in 2012.

Big Picture is a collaboration between Artsreach, Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset Visual Arts, PVA MediaLab, Sherborne House Arts, Sherborne School, Walford Mill Crafts and Dorset County Council.
