Water & Stone

A community concert with local inspiration

A one-off ‘Alfresco Picnic Promenade’ held earlier in the summer at St Catherine’s Church in Abbotsbury has provided the inspiration for the latest joint venture between the BSO Resonate Strings and The Freedance Choir. This special community concert titled ‘Water & Stone’ will celebrate the 2012 Cultural Olympiad and the culmination of Ben Osborne’s Jurassic Journey project.

The five musicians who make up the BSO Resonate Strings each represent one of the five string sections of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, while The Freedance Choir is comprised of around forty performers from communities around the county. Directed by Dorset musician and composer Sammy Hurden, the concerts will feature Sammy’s original music from Jurassic Journey, inspired by the Coast, and a range of memorable pieces including some from the orchestral repertoire that touch upon the special heritage of South Dorset.

The concert at St Mary’s Church, Powerstock, will also feature a special composition that Sammy was commissioned to write for her choir, thanks to a generous grant from Johnnie Boden. The piece is based upon the tuning of the church bells. Titled ‘The Hare & The Harp’ the composition was inspired by a stone carving found in Powerstock of a hare playing a harp. This rare carving, usually housed in the Dorset County Museum, has kindly been released for the event.

St Mary’s Church, Powerstock. Sunday 25th November at 7:30pm. 01308 485264
