This is the place to post rumours that you may hear on the extremely well-oiled Bridport Rumour Mill, and give other members the chance to either confirm or deny those rumours.
Rumour 1.
House recently auctioned off with out-buildings in Netherbury by Symonds & Sampson has been sold to celeb chef Lesley Walters for her to open up a new cookery school.
Rumour 2.
Martin Clunes moved to Beaminster after a falling out with the 3 Horse Shoes management and a handful of influential Powerstock villagers.
Rumour 3.
Parnham House was once about to be bought by Madonna and Guy Richie (as was Punkowle Manor).
Rumour 5.
The Bridport Radio is facing court proceedings for publishing this article.

I was watching Mark Hix and thinking of Ernie all the while. He was always proud of Mark’s talents so if he was sipping a pint and seeing Mark get selected to cook two two courses for a French Banquet then he would be bursting with pride. Mark Hix’s Stargazey Pie was inspirational. He is right. Rabbit and Crayfish are scavengers, free food, herbs and plants from the garden and a Perry Jelly. I think the whole menu was good.Ham, egg and peas (but posh) to start, then salmon and duck egg, followed by Mark’s genuine food. Hello Mark. When you and your family are ready, how about returning to Bridport and opening a Real Food Eating Place?
That Huge Fearless WHATSHISFACE has bought and lives in a big spread in Uplyme and appparantlee is opening a shop in Hacksminister in Devon, he ain’t local anymore. Cameras everywhere………..
Maybe the ‘apparition’ you saw was another dog walker. If you are going to post about ghostly encounters, I suggest you take a look at the apparition which has been seen three or four times over the last 2 years down Gundry Lane. The figure of an old man dressed in victorian style clothing has been seen ‘walking’ across the car park of the youth centre and into the disused custom and excise building. I say it is seen ‘walking’ but the reports are that it’s legs are cut off from the mid calf section downwards. Which would indicate the the apparition is walking on the level of ground which was exposed all those years ago, and the level of the car park has been raised.
Here, That piccy of the pope beckoning in a sinister fashion to those innocent children gave me the bee-jeevers!!
Re. The Bat…Lucky You.
I don’t want to be one to spread rumours, but what else can you do with them? I can understand the Clunes clan wanting to move out of powerstock, it has become the sort of village where they judge you on the size and colour of your Aga. (mind you if he wants a quiet life he should stop agreeing to opening fetes) A lot of the stuff about the former Harbour Master has been perpetrated by a bunch of back stabbers who have nothing better to do with their time than complain that the HM should walk around in a uniform. Where do they think it is “”””disneyland””””? It is a grotty little dump of a place that has been badly developed for the last 50 years and will never recover. It is true that someone did suffer an industrial injury while moving some mooring chains but I don’t think that the enquiry has published its findings yet (if it has I would like to know where to get a copy) so until it does I will hold back on accusations of misconduct There has been a concerted effort by someone very closely associated with the HM who had been trying to undermine and discredit him for years, I only hope the council see through this gutless little toe rag and make sure they don’t get the HM job (even if they were qualified to apply) Rumour 1 The hideous new development in west bay is already subsiding and the company that was going to take over the restaurant have pulled out because it got flooded in the last storms Rumor 2 People who have flats in Pier Terrace (that old dutch looking thing on east side) have seen their property price fall by up to 20% as a result of the new carbuncle built opposite them.
So basically Rustic, what you really wanted to say was; “”””In my opinion that in no way reflects on the views of Bridport Radio and may/may not be fact; Tony Preston was a decent bloke who was great to have a pint and a chat with, and that Jamie Radcliff is a scheming manipulative toe-rag and will probably…(in my opinion) have about as much respect from the the West Bay locals as I do for Realworld.”””” And Rustic, I must admit, I totally and undeniably agree with you! Bollocks to this “”””naming no names”””” malarky, if it’s your own opinion, and BR has a disclaimer…let’s name and shame them!
Fiona Phillips (GMTV Presenter) has bought a cottage in Burton Bradstock
That about sums it up carlito, I was being about as diplomatic as I could manage. Perhaps jamie would be the ideal HM as someone who mirrors his domain, ie second rate, tawdry, jumped up little dung house who is dressing up trying to be something it is not and most definately has ideas abouve his station or capabilities, in other words west bay. Oh and if any residents take umbridge at my description of the place you only have yourselves to blame for consistantly allowing the appaling developments to go ahead.
Oh Nooooo! Why couldn’t it have been some nice looking morning television presenter.
Rustic and Carlito You seem to have said what I have overheard a lot of regular users of WB harbour say. Enough said…….
that ratcliff bloke, wasnt he the one who took the new multi-million-pound coastguard boat out for a spin and managed to ‘crash’ it while on the open sea??…does anyone else remember the details? –maybe the council could be jogged on that one eh! Tony is a top bloke, hope he stays in town whatever happens with captain smarmy.
I don’t Believe it….Just went down to Scummers for my afternoon’s supply of strong booze… and you know what..they’ve stuck a PMV lane right along the ENTIRE Alcohol aisle…. I ask you!!! Not only that… they’ve also put in a Disabled parking bay right next to the Cigarette counter.
If they build flats, they could call them ‘Drug Induced Heights’ Thus making a reference to the prescription drugs issued to bona fida patients at the location, as well as having a double meaning for the druggies who steal from our shops to feed their drug craved addiction.
No silver changed hands during the research for the above piece, my integrity is on a similar footing to that of the great Michael Winner of car insurance fame. \””””Calm down Mr Bat, it\’s only a Pasty.\””””
Tobiah, congratulations on being the first member to forget that this is a RUMOUR thread. If this was a FACT CARVED IN STONE thread then perhaps we would have, at great length, delved into the complex inner workings of Tony and James’ relationship and interviewed both parties for a balanced argument. Anyway it’s obvious that you know more about these two than anyone else, so why not divulge some educational snippets for us all? Dark Star – if you think for one minute that anyone here could afford a mooring at Westbay – or could even afford to bend the rules in order to obtain one – you are very gravely mistaken. One does wonder though…if the waiting list is, as Tony professed, 75 years long, it makes you wonder how anyone we know will EVER get a mooring there within our life time! Perhaps Mr S Miles could shed some light? Is it a clever use of the mooring sharing clause?
I remember that ‘accident’ involving Captain Radcliffe when he was at the helm of the Fabulously expensive new Coast Guard Vessel out in the open sea…. He ploughed into a dirty great big Russian Trawler (no it was an Estonian Vessel I believe…) He was busy yappin away… said he never saw anything, apparently……!
…so does that mean he crashed it then??? Rumour has it james radcliff used to watch a lot of harbour lights -and thats why he dresses like a bellboy.
To quote darkstar “”””and kick them scabby anglers off the piers, they all come down from the grim north “””” Id jus like to imform you that i am infact local and enjoy fishing off the pier…least i used to before they changed it all…my son is also a member of the local juniors sea angling club which also fish from the pier…so you see infact we are all not from the north nor do we leave chip wrappers anywhere 🙂 Oh and back on topic i have also heard the rumours involving said HM
I feel it is time to put an end to the Jamie Radcliffe/Tony Preston rumours. Jamie was on an undercover mission at the time of the unfortunate incident with the boat, he was heading off a consignment of “”””GUSTO”””” which was being secretly shipped in by some incomers from the Notting Hill area, It is believed that Tony was captured and tortured by “”””celebrities”””” at a house in Netherbury purported to be the site of a new Cooking School, reaching breaking point when subjected to the full PJ Harvey stage set, having shown courage and valour with no thought of his own safety i think you will agree that Jamie is the rightful heir to Tonys bar stool. (any chance of getting in on the xmas tree scam this year???) Random are there not signs up prohibiting fishing from the pier????. and as far as an anglers jetty how about you all assemble on the temporary pontoon and i will cast you off into the sunset.
I ain’t one to spread rumours….. but – as Rustic said – what else you gonna do with em…? I thought I’d add my voice to th debate… Yep… I certainly heard that same tale about ‘Captain’ Radcliffe……He ain’t no Sailor let alone a Skipper by all accounts…. I ain’t seen Tony for a while…. No offence Random, Pal, (I’m sure you’re law abiding..) but generally them Fishermen do get on one’s t*ts… especially when they park themselves on th beach in th height of Summer and get their rods out when the sea is full of bathers (inc kids). That should be stopped….!
Well folks, rumour mongers et al, James Radcliffe may not be the best skipper/boatman, but the fact is, he has the job of Harbour Master, so get over it, or give up your moorings to others on the endless list, and move on if youre going to be so mean to the man!! He was obviously the man for the job, over and above his rivals and there were some of those, so i would like to wish the new harbour master welcome to his new position and good luck with dealing with those who dislike him so much,
Truth or Rumour that a Local Person bought one of the new top floor apartments Off-Plan and sold it on at a profit of over £100K?
I’ve heard that the new harbour master is resigning!
thats right Rustic, i heard that rumour too…s’okay, apparently they’re looking for lifeguards at the leisure centre, (if you’re a good swimmer that is)
and I’ve heard the peasants are revolting, could this be true?
Saw a picture in the Wip Wop that seems to suggest the new harbour master is a Village People fan,
I’ve heard that the council are making the new harbour master wear a white shirt so it will be easier to identify when “”””his”””” assistant starts stabbing him in the back
the peasants are indeed revolting… but don’t nearly ming as much as the filthy rich. Apparently JR can’t swim that well, so he’s going to be working in the ‘Harbour Lights’ kiosk -(forfilling a lifelong ambition)
I had heard the the George had gone downhill since the Undertaker had taken it over, well after having visited the said establishment recenmtly I can confirm that it is a pale shadow of its former self. It will always be the regulars that make it what it is but some sign of life from the management would be good. We now have a bloke that can hardly string a sentence together and a woman who appears never to have seen a pub from the business end of the bar. The menu has gone to pot and little labels announcing coffee and a cake for OAPs would better be pløaced in a west bay kiosk than in what was once a great place to eat. I overheard an very funny anecdote from two of the local characters who drink in there with one saying to the other that the new people had been brought in as trouble shooters to which the other replied “”””well best they find some one who is a better shot then”””” Only in the George, priceless. Rumour has it they will be gone before the years end
Back a few months ago, we heard the rumour that Jacqui was leaving…then everyone was rumoured as saying they would boycott the place, then the enevitable REALITY is that everyone just went back in there! That’s loyalty for you! £3.10 for a pint? I’m off to Notting Hill!
The George was never the same since they cleaned (scrapped) the nicotine off the walls (early 90’s?)and everone realised there were paintings on the walls! All the drinkers go to the Hope now!!
Rumour has it that the excitable Ros Kayes is against eco freindly low cost housing. She will be running for the ultra right conservatives in the next election
MP Oliver (i don’t live here) Letwin is in charge of Camerons policy review. In his spare time he is a non executive director for NM Rothchild Corporate Finance whose current business includes “”””ongoing”””” work advising on the £2.8bn restructuring and funding by goverment of the Post Office network. This is basically privitisation by the back door and as a net result closure of many rural post offices. When Letwin presented a petition to parliment in December from his west Dorset constituents demanding that the goverment help maintain rural post offices it is not known if he found time to pass on our views to his paymasters Rothchilds. Me thinks not.
I heard that Rustic and Carlito are actualy the same person, unemployed, living off the state and come from Dudley (or worse still weymouth), we dont need the plague with therse two sados around
the Lyric in Barrack st, is to be turned into apartments?
Yeah, We’ve ALL read it in the Wip Wop…
All except me.
I’ve lived in Bridport for most of my life but never done the Brewery tour (too busy testing the finished results). Can someone: 1. Tell me if the tour is any good and 2. Is it true that the pipes strapped to the bridge over the Brit by the water mill carry spring water to make the beer? (and presumably not linked to the toilets in the Leisure Centre which makes the “”””bog standard”””” (haha) BB)
I have done the brewery tour and it is just like their beer, rubbish!
After completely decimating the busy local trade I can confirm that I heard a bloke say that the “”””undertaker”””” and his morbid missis are, at long last, leaving the George. Hurrah Hurrah Hurrah, My only fear is that the gormless Palmer brood will put in someone else totally unsuited to the pub trade. Oi Palmers!! I don’t know if you visit this site but a good starting point for a landlord and landlady is that they actually like people and have the ability to hold a conversation of longer than three words.
…there is no comments box attached to the Police Ball article, so confirm or deny; Am I the only person who translates “”””Police Ball”””” as “”””Drunken over-paid idiot gathering, where freshwater staff and entertainers are treated like scum and, at the end of it all, conduct a major (and futile) cover-up operation to stop the stories escaping about the massive drunken BRAWL that generally follows in the carpark?”””” I suppose “”””Police Ball”””” is more catchy.
Sounds like you have some first hand experience of “”””Balls gone By”””” Carlito, but I attended the police ball last year as the charity /comedy auctioneer. (I have to be honest and say that the charity bit went OK but the comedy wasn’t too well received by the majority.) The night as a whole was a great success and to see the Sidekicks in full swing was a joy. The dancing police video put together by Andy Hawthorn was superb as was the big screen live camerawork elevating Shaun and the boys to supergroup status. I think Scott McGregor had done a fine job of putting together a good night out that raised a fair few bob for “”””local”””” charities and good causes, and based on last year I could recommend it to anyone. I have never been a fan of the black tie cummerbund style of dress for men but the ladies looked awesome in the posh frocks and I think the only way that Scott could improve the night would be to have everyone come in fancy dress as Police Officers, now that would be funny. (Don’t forget that at the ball there were only about 3 serving police officers as the other 2 were on duty) Everyone I met was cordial and well behaved, the bar crew didn’t seem harassed and I certainly saw no brawls in the car park although I did have to leave at about midnight to attend the annual meeting of Smugglers, Burglars and Badger Baiters which by tradition is held on the same night as the PB for obvious reasons.
Er Carlito I hate to have to be the one to point this out to you but the article about the Police Ball is advertising an event (last years very good by the way) and it would appear that the norm is that there isn’t a comment box for gigs. What would we all say anyway? “”””Can’t go as I am trying out a new knitting pattern that night”””” As a thought oh mighty Editor how about a page dedicated for reviews of events that people have seen, restaurants eaten in, that sort of thing. You could call it “”””A Night At The… and leave us to fill in either, Evershot Hall, Art Centre, Loders Fete, Pub, Comedy, Cinema, etc etc
Dear Rustic The team at Bridport Radio would welcome reviews from our readers, they are usually posted under the existing page headings (so a restaurant review goes under “”””Eating Out””””)kk? – Bring it on
There I go, painting all of the balls with the same brush! Bentley, not that I wish you to blurt out my ID in surprise and alarm, but I was at this meeting you describe wasn’t I? YEEES… Having drank enough booze that evening to cause my brain to divorce my body, I can’t for the life of me remember why I was there…but I can remember you arriving, and gesturing wildly about the flat response at the ball, before slumping at the bar in comic defeat. It may have been the first time I heard the “”””Jack Russell”””” joke. A true classic.
Ah yes Carlito I remember it well, I also remember why you were there and despite your prolific intake of moonshine that night you did well to last the distance as there were only 5 of us left at the end. The two chair-people (wink wink, say no more) yourself and your adorable companion and myself with only a serving lad to be privvy to our discussions. I would show photos but Boots wouldnt print them
what a civilized conversation (C45 B46) guess you have known each other for years eh? Oh what it would be like to be in “”””your gang”””” (I can only dream of such heady intellectual feastings!) on the subject of the police..(not the ball) why do they call us by our first names sometimes?(when we all know we have not been properly introduced!!)
As far as I am concerned you can dream on you dainty fop. I think Rustic on cull the gull maybe right
Tuzo, this is no “”””gang”””” you tiresome wench. Judging by your envy, it’s obvious you haven’t quite grasped the concept of “”””friendship””””, which comes as no surprise. It is odd that you use this forum (which is obviously your only contact with humans) to interrupt conversations like an ill-timed fart. No, actually an ill-timed fart is potentially more amusing. And yes, you are right. I have known Bentley for about 20 years.
If these are the only “”””humans”””” I meet, then who the hell are the others? Your leg was being pulled (carlito 49) but it came away in my hand, what do you want me to do with it? I will sit back and read the unending, unedited squirts of monologue from you on all the many subjects you have an opinion on. Maybe your good humor will return, and maybe there is a policeman out there who can answer my previous question? (we were talking about the police ball?)
I’ve been away for 10 days and come back to the hot gossip that on the 4th October our local rag published a photo of the rugby team with newly sponsored kit and an appendage? I am sure that I could find at least another 19 girlfriends, who after careful viewing would be only too willing to sponsor looser fitting shorts for the rest of the team.
I couldn’t find the said appendage online but I did find two balls
You may be interested to learn that I’ve been working on a martial arts cop disco dance epic to be premiered at this year’s policeman’s ball – with PC McGregor and colleagues strutting their funky stuff to “”””Everybody was kung fu fighting””””. Still in edit at the moment but particularly enjoying the can-can sequence… I do have a spare guest ticket if anyone fancies a surreal but pleasant night out.
So then AH what exactly is it that you are confirmig or denying?? That the police are given to violent outbursts on the dance floor or that you are cinderella and have no mates to go to the ball with?
Maffia, Triads, Columbian Drug Barons, Al Queda, Local Brewery firm, who is responsible for running the Amusement Arcade in west street ? Why is it always empty, what did the books look like for last year ? If it made a load of money then it just has to be a scam because no bugger ever goes in there. Ere ! ! ! whats this severed horses head doing in my bed ? ?
I think you’ll find it only takes a few saddoes a day with a gambling addiction, pumping their whole pay cheques into those machines to make the place pay.
spose same goes for the pretty shop fronted gift shops in S St, always empty, always displaying new stock…..any others? The Co-Op maybe, only ever a max of 2 people in there plus 1.5 people on the tills, very strange experience.
I have heard that the old medical centre is being turned into a mosque
I heard (draino 58) from a surveyor friend that it is going to be turned into a center for sexually transmitted diseases (or rather the treatment of such, as you dont have to go to a center to get them do you?)
Dearest Nurse Ceptic Thank you for your opinions, however if you had cared to look a little further than the word DEBATE, you might have noticed I had actually asked the \””””doctor\”””” two questions…what was his degree in? and what was the possibility of becoming a chav though accent and clothing alone. I dont recall asking you any questions, and I might say, if you were indeed a nurse I might very well opt for a private hospital, when they let me out of the psychiatric unit.
I’ve heard that even though parking is very short in North Allington (as indeed it is throughout bridport)and even though the start of the proposed re-development could be months or years away, the people who own the sight are such a bunch of tight bas***ds that they wont let people park in all those empty spaces. Who made that descision remains a mystery but whoever it was needs to have a long look at themselves.
I know no-one looks at this any more, but have you heard the story about Huge Furry-Wotsit? His house near Axminster is up for sale and his wife has run off with one of his chefs. Apparently. You read it here first.
