Buffalo Gals

Buffalo Gals are fast becoming the UK’s favourite old-time country string band, and in Dorset they certainly developed a firm fanbase with their string of sell-out Artsreach performances two years ago. They now make a long-awaited return to the Artsreach circuit in January and March, performing at five rural venues.

Buffalo Gals perform old-time country music from the Southern Appalachian region of the United States, exploring ballads, gospel, blues, and fiery flatfoot step-dancing to expertly evoke the spirit, excitement and passion of American roots music. Firmly rooted in this American tradition, with an authentic sound driven by fiddle, banjo, percussive step dance, and soaring harmonies, the ’Gals (and guys!) produce an irresistible show packed with all the excitement and passion of Appalachian, Bluegrass, Blues and Cajun tunes and songs.

The six members of Buffalo Gals are all professional performers with a wide range of talents and interests, all of whom share a passion for the traditional music of the USA, and bring to their performance their many years of experience and enthusiasm for the genre. Heading up the band is award-winning fiddle and banjo player Kate Lissauer, hailing from Maryland in the heart of the Appalachians.

You’ll hear the influence of American music everywhere; it has been hugely influential in many aspects of the music we listen to today. The roots music of America has given inspiration to almost every type of popular music we have heard in the last century. With Buffalo Gals, you will have the opportunity to relive the early forms of country music, and hear some of how American traditional music sounded when the recording industry was in its infancy.

Whether their audiences are seasoned Bluegrass and Country string band lovers or newcomers to the sound of old-time Country music, Buffalo Gals continue to surprise and delight people wherever they go. Carrying on the great tradition of the early string bands, the group enlivens their favourite old songs and tunes with their distinct personality, using top-class instrumental work, soul-searing harmonies and thrillingly syncopated percussive step-dance. Above all, it is fun, social music with a great drive and passion, engaging everyone in its excitement!
