Effra are a young folk trio playing original traditional-sounding tunes with a bold contemporary twist. Fiddle, mandolin, accordion and guitar intertwine using a variety of influences that sound like a journey across Europe, collecting music from many cultures and melding them seamlessly into new and beautiful sounds. Winners of the Bath Folk Festival ‘New Shoots Award’ 2012, they are touring now to launch their first EP which will be on sale on the night.
A perfectionist in all he does, guitarist Alex Bishop is also a luthier, or guitar maker. He studied for a BSc degreee in ‘Musical Instruments’ at London Metropolitan University, and graduated in 2010 with a First Class Honours degree, the ‘Top Thirty Student’ award, and the ‘University Recognition Award For Academic Excellence’ award. Working for three years under the expert guidance of Nicholas Blishen, Norman Myall, Martin Bowers and Godefroy Maruejouls, he has developed a flair and passion for guitar making.
In September 2010 he was awarded the ‘Cockpit Arts / NADFAS’ award for designer-makers. In February 2011 he moved into his current workshop at Cockpit Arts in Creekside, Deptford, where he designs and builds contemporary gypsy jazz guitars on commission. He works on a single guitar at a time, using the finest materials, striving to constantly improve the sonority and playability of this type of guitar. He also teaches gypsy jazz guitar playing.
