May Day Celebration

Yeovil Trades Union Council are once again holding their annual May Day celebration in the Labour Club, and everyone is welcome. This year features some of the best music in the South West, with The Skimmity Hitchers, Thomas and the Mocks Ups and DJ Dappa Dan all joining forces to put on a night to remember.

The event, on Friday 29th April, will not only celebrate May Day, but raise funds for campaigns across the area that support public services and oppose the damaging cuts that all people across the region face at the moment.

skimmity-parlimentHeadlining the evening will be The Skimmity Hitchers. Fast becoming a favourite in pubs and festivals across the region, they recently took their unique brand of cider inspired folk / punk to Parliament to call for the protection of rights for rural workers. This band of brothers, blaggers and badgers, will be loading up their Skimmity wagon and bringing some good old-fashioned Scrumpy & Western live music with a modern edge to Yeovil.

Dorchester’s Thomas and the Mock Ups will open the evening with a strong set of political punk / indie songs. Described as “Dirty South Rock and Roll” with a sound “reminiscent of The Jam’s pomp and swagger”, these lads are defiantly on the way up and one to watch.

Holding the whole evening together will be Wimbornes own Rock’nRoll Town Crier, DJ Dappa Dan. Dan will take to the decks to get everyone in the mood for a night of partying and politics with some of the finest ska tracks ever produced.

Viv Willis from Yeovil TUC said: “This promises to be a great night, not only have we two great bands and a DJ, but we have a number of inspiring speakers to highlight the issues we all face. However the main point of the evening is to have a great night and a real party. The is the third May Day event we have put on and following last years success we are really looking forward to another great night.”
