September Events West Bay Discovery Centre

Booksigning with Elizabeth Buckler Gale

Elizabeth Buckler Gale the well known local historian who also volunteers at West Bay Discovery Centre has just published a new book documenting the remarkable story of a three-year-old girl Betty Mackay who was evacuated to west Dorset during the Second World War.  After the war Betty returned to London but was desperate to return back to Burton Bradstock. Elizabeth will be joining us for a book signing session on Thursday 5th September from 11am – 1pm.

Dorset Architecture Heritage Open Day

Once again for Dorset Architecture Week West Bay Discovery Centre are opening up our mezzanine area which is office space and normally closed to the public. On Sunday 8th September it will be accessible for one day only to enable high-level viewing of the interior and to enable views from the windows out to the harbour and beach to be enjoyed.  Our home was a former Methodist Chapel, which is Grade II listed. It was constructed by a local shipbuilder and completed in 1849. After laying largely unused for several years, it was completely restored and adapted for use as a visitor centre in 2018. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Centre’s exhibition “A Resort to Rival Others”, which features the early, ambitious, development of West Bay as a seaside resort.

Please note there is no access to the mezzanine level for wheelchairs or dogs although we both accessible to all and dog friendly in the area downstairs that is our Visitor Centre.

There are a number of other locations around Bridport and the rest of Dorset find out more here. This event is also part of the National Heritage Open Days that are run in September every year.
