Sound of Blue Note

The “Sound of Blue Note” Band will be at the Bridport Arts Centre on Friday 23 May with guest DJ James Baker.

The iconic sound and image of the Blue Note record label in the 50s and 60s pioneered “hard bop”, mixing jazz with soul, blues and gospel. Playing swinging, funky tunes by major figures including Blue Mitchell, Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard, The Sound Of Blue Note faithfully recreate that vibrant music exactly as it would have been heard “back in the day”.

The band will be performing pieces from their new CD “Outside In” and this show promises to deliver swing and soulfulness with a selection of tunes that exemplify the Blue Note legacy while steering clear of the
well-worn ‘standards’ that have been played by so many others. The Sound Of Blue Note is guaranteed to have you bobbing your head, tapping your toes and racing back to (or re-stocking) your record collection to revisit these classics.

The band features some of the South’s finest jazz musicians, with Ian Ellis on tenor sax, Andy Urquhart on trumpet, Guy Gardner on piano, Ben Taylor on bass and Andy Hague on drums. They have worked with many great musicians including Jools Holland, Tina May, Ruby Turner, Ian Shaw and James Taylor. The band is going from strength to strength performing at top venues including London’s Dean Street Pizza Express and Boisdale’s, and sometimes putting on shows with special guests Ian Shaw, Mark Nightingale and Alan Barnes.

To add to the evening, guest DJ James Baker will be spinning discs before the show and also in the interval and afterwards; James is a much sought-after specialist in vinyl, who has supported a range of artists including Courtney Pine and Avishai Cohen, and he will ensure a great atmosphere.
