A band made up of some of Britain’s leading jazz musicians arrives at Sladers Yard on Saturday 17 May for an all- star blistering night of smooth and shining jazz classics. Book now and look forward to an unforgettable evening.
Dreaming Jazz promises the intimacy of top musicians playing the jazz they love most. The trio have come together as a chance to escape the formal arrangements of the big band and to play the hard-swinging jazz they love in the style of a late night Harlem jam session. The music includes well known songs from Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Harry “Sweets” Edison, and Teddy Wilson.
Ian Smith has played trumpet with many British bands, working with talents as varied as Gwyneth Herbert, Hank Wangford and Michael Horowitz. He has lectured on Modern and Renaissance poetry at universities on both sides of the Atlantic while regularly playing jazz with some of the leading players in Britain and Europe. A published writer he is currently working on a play for Radio 4 with Alan Barnes.
Alan Barnes, leading British saxophonist, has the unique gift for combining modern sophistication with the charm of the jazz tradition. Internationally acclaimed and multi-award winning, he plays alto sax, baritone sax and clarinet. Over the years Alan has featured on many jazz recordings and has toured and performed with an astonishing variety of bands and musicians. He has won many British jazz awards in alto, baritone, clarinet and arranging categories. In 2001 and 2006 he received the prestigious BBC Jazz instrumentalist of the year award and in November 2003 was made a fellow of the Leeds College of Music where he originally studied music. 2003 saw the inception of Alan’s own record label Woodville Records.
Compilations and commissions include “The Sherlock Holmes Suite”, two series of jazz songs written with playwright Alan Plater – “Songs for Unsung Heroes” and “The Seven Ages of Jazz”, “The Mabella Suite”, and settings of e.e. cummings and other poets arranged for jazz octet. Latest projects include a clarinet led trio with Jim Hart on vibes and Paul Clavis on drums and an all-star octet playing the music of Duke Ellington.·
