Gwyneth Herbert – ‘The Sea Cabinet’. Join the Award-wining singer-songwriter ONSTAGE
Gwyneth Herbert is heading to Bridport on Friday 19 July with her musicians to promote her new CD – ’The Sea Cabinet’.
Commissioned by Aldeburgh Music, the concept is a beautiful, intricate exploration of the sea in all its magic, majesty and mystery. Developed during an artist residency at Snape Maltings, the home of Benjamin Britten, it is a unique multi-sensory, multi-layered song-cycle written and ripened on the Aldeburgh coast, drawing – as George Crabbe and then Benjamin Britten did – from the area’s violent and beautiful coastline, and inspired by stormy morning walks, midnight dips and rum-soaked lock-ins.
Working with musicians from her world-class band, Gwyneth will present an imaginative fusion of music and storytelling that explores stories from inshore and out. Her mini-orchestra features a wondrous array of instruments, voices and sampled field recordings, creating a wild and unpredictable ocean of sound in and around each song that draws directly from the musical language of the sea.
Gwyneth is also calling for ‘any pirate with a good set o’ pipes’ to join her troupe of world-class musicians onstage to be part of a Flashmob Pirate Chorus.
