Classic film Battle of Algiers to be shown in Bridport. With the current uprisings in the Arab world, this film has never been more relevant.
Between 1954 and 1962 the Algerian people fought a guerrilla war for their independence from French colonial rule. The French retaliated with brutal military force, but finally were forced to leave.
Gillo Pontecorvo’s thrilling classic film uses B&W documentary-style photography to tell the story of a historic real-life conflict. Made in 1965 and banned in France for some years, one of its strengths lies in its attention to the complexities of the situation on both sides.
Described by the Observer as, “One of the most remarkable films of all time” and regularly included in lists of the top ten best films, Battle of Algiers is a powerful masterpiece of film-making and a must-see.
Rated (15) and not suitable for children
Autonomy Films will show Battle of Algiers at the St John’s Ambulance Hall, Rax Lane, Bridport at 7.30pm on Sunday March 27.
